In wrestling, there is perhaps no better way to explain this than to go into why WWE has always done cage matches differently than anywhere else. Longtime wrestling fans know that WWE-style cage match rules, where escaping the cage wins the match, was not the norm—in every other promotion, the cage was there to stop interference and it was portrayed as impossible to escape. In the WWWF, though, as the ultimate feud-ender, the idea was that you won a cage match by beating your opponent so badly that he couldn’t stop you from leaving. This fit Sammartino perfectly because he could finally lose his cool, but as the honorable, virtuous hero, he would show mercy at the end and calmly walk out of the cage, all while showing disgust for the villain he had just dispatched. That sense of honor was what also what made him the perfect legend to come out of retirement and battle a heel. When Randy Savage crushed Ricky Steamboat’s throat with the timekeeper’s bell, for example, it was only natural that Bruno lost his cool and throttled a bragging Macho Man during the post-match interview. ————————- Is this true? I mean, even as a child, I could understand the “beat your opponent up until they can’t walk out of the cage, but I did get a laugh out of people referring to it as “winner runs away” stipulation and didn’t realize that only the WWF did it that way. I always wondered why they were the only ones and where that started from

That may be how it started, but I have always hated the escape the cage victory, since it seems to be mainly used to prevent someone having to get beat, and it isn't a logical conclusion to a blow off style match. But then, how often do we see a logical progression to a cage match these days anyway?

Growing up, I always wondered why the WWF had different cage rules, but this makes sense. Maintaining the honor of the babyface was vital in those days, so giving him an out to beat the holy hell out of the villain was smart. Great post!

I have literally never realized that it wasn't done that way in other promotions. I guess I never gave it that much thought.
The spots of trying to stop the other guy from climbing out or escaping through the door, or both wrestlers racing to climb opposite sides just seem to great to pass up in favor of pinfall or submission only.

Escape the cage has always been a dumb rule. The cage is there to keep people in.

I suppose in the same way the King of the Mountain match was honoring Jeff Jarrett's long time reverence for free climbing and respect for the tradition of hockey penalty boxes.

Worst regular gimmick match ever. Worse than anything on a pole. Just the fact that people didn’t even know real steel cage matches were brutal no DQ, keep-people-from-escaping-or-interfering feud-enders only adds to how much I hate the WWE “I want to hurt you so bad I can’t wait to run away from you and escape from you” version.

It also made sense to have the face win by escaping or leaving since the heel working with Bruno/Backlund/Morales would usually feud with the number two face in the company after their feud ended. They didn't take a clean pinfall in the big blowoff and would still be seen as a threat. It also gave the heel a cheap way to win, babyface hits them so hard they stumble out the door and keep the face strong.

Last season on Lucha Underground they had a cage match between Matanza and Dragon Azteca and Dragon Azteca "won" by getting thrown so hard against the cage he tore the side of the cage down. So the authority figure ruled to reset the match pinfall and submissions only.

I really never cared for the WWE cage rules, but this makes sense and is actually a pretty cool justification. It also kind of makes sense from the heels perspective. "Sure I'll meet you in a cage match, but I'm not gonna let you lock me in there with no where to go.I can win if I escape the cage."

Gorilla Monsoon explains this on one of the early Coliseum Videos. "Two men enter, one leaves" type of deal. I grew up with this being the only type of cage match. I had never seen a cage match with pinfalls until I started watching WCW. Quite frankly I thought THAT was a dumb stipulation. If the match was gonna end on a pinfall or submission then why bother putting a cage up at all? Just do a regular match with no DQ.

I think the 'escape the cage' stipulation is perfectly acceptable when there's something on the line, like a belt or a number one contender spot. The natural drama of 'who's going to touch the ground first' is the result of a cage match having actual stakes.
However, the stipulation doesn't work (as well) when it's simply a grudge match in a cage, because that should be the chance for the face to beat up the heel who has been taking a powder any chance he or she gets (or, to keep the heel's friends from interfering).
EDIT: And because of the problem of outside interference, that's why, in kayfabe terms, the Hell in a Cell match came into being. But even that match still had the wrestlers leaving the cage/cell.
