If I were his parents I wouldn't have even let it go to court. I would have just threw all his crap on the curb one day when he went out for 3 liter bottles of soda and change the locks. if he tried to sue I'd ask where his rental agreement was.

I don’t find it that weird that people at that age live at home in this economy, though it would not be and isn’t my choice. I moved out at 26 and it felt hella late. But why would you let it go to a court date and show up and argue your case? That is just a level of no self-awareness that I didn’t think possible. You’re showing that A) You don’t give a shit about your parents’ desires despite the fact you’ve spent almost your entire life under their roof. B) It shows you’re dumb enough to show your face to the media while being the face of lack of motivation. And C) Your reward for showing up is an almost certain verbal beatdown from a judge. If you’re 30 and still handling life like this, you’re screwed regardless.

I'm 38 and most of my relatives don't understand why I don't still live in my parents old house. The idea of me not wanting to live in an inconvenient suburb with my aging, cranky Dad and probably have to sleep in the room where he keeps my Mom's ashes seems to be completely unimaginable to them.

Are you sure this isn't George Costanza? Maybe he was too shy to admit that he was their butler.

I lived with my parents until I was 27. It was for financial and mental health reasons. I contributed rent and helped keep the house clean/ran errands etc. I would never dream of being a burdensome mooch of my parents were kind enough to give me a home. This kind of behaviour sickens me.

Meh, in this economy there are excuses for living at home. There's no excuse for being a lazy bastard leeching off your parents. New York has a really high cost of living. Granted it's not as bad in the state proper as it is in NYC, but between underpaying jobs and high costs of living, it can be prohibitively expensive to live on your own even with a full-time job. It's the same in Melbourne and Sydney. Impossible to find a house under $500,000 and rent's very expensive. You could move out of the cities, but there isn't any jobs in small towns and rural areas.

While I don't live with my parents, I do have three roommates. Housing prices where I live has skyrocketed in the last 5-8 years. I've pretty much accepted that until I either get a better paid job or a girlfriend to live with, I'm stuck in shared accommodation.

I moved out when I was 18 and never had to move back, but if the parents are fine with it, it can be a great way to save money. That way you can save up to buy a house rather than rent. Then in some cases you can even offer to let your parents live with you later in life and then you take care of them/they help out with the grand kids, circle of life style. Back more to this case though, oddly enough rent isn’t that high in NY state, at least compared to other parts of the Northeast. NYC is ridiculously expensive, but this dude is a long way from the city. Even if it was higher though it’s tough to feel bad for him as he comes off as such a mooch.

I'm not going to shit on the guy since I don't really know what his circumstances were.
But the two funny things to me about this case is 1) Precedence, lol, and 2) how frickin' dysfunctional must the family be for things to get to this extreme.

I'm in London so I hear all of you. Me and my wife have been fortunate enough to get a flat, getting the keys in exactly 1 week funnily enough. Nothing fancy, the top floor of a house, 2 bedrooms though 1's ridiculously small. Took our life savings, years of both of us saving hard, and a gift of 30 grand because she's lucky enough to have rich cousins for the deposit and fees and everything else.

I'm 26 and live at home still. Mainly because I live in London where house and rent prices have skyrocketed. However I pay rent to my parents and I work for my Dad's business. Despite that I still kind of feel like I'm a loser.

OK, about this guy... there are news reports out there that he is currently using Best Buy because he was fired for refusing to work on Saturdays, the only day he had access to his child. Also, he is in a custody battle over said child, which is why he says he is too busy to have a job.

I feel sorry for him in the sense that he has no self-awareness. Why on earth would you want to go on CNN to let everyone know that you're 30 and live with your parents? It would be the most embarrassing thing I could think of times 10.
As far as getting visitation rights for his kid. Wouldn't it be a way better sell for yourself, when you could tell the judge that you're employed full time and have the ability to provide for your child? If his child comes and visits him, what are they going to do? Play videogames in his room?
On a personal note, I recently had to move as my landlord sold my apartment. My mother told me, if I couldn't find a place, I could move in with her. To which my response was "Yeah, I think I'll go live in an alley or under a bridge"
