It looks like a lousy video game adaptation, but coming after the charm that Detective Pikachu has pulled off in its trailers makes it even worse.

Jim Carrey doesn't really *feel* like Robotnik; he kinda comes off as Jim Carrey with a mustache. Maybe that's how you play a live action Robotnik and I guess he can be that way in the games, but I don't know. Feels like a mix of "phoning it in" and "pointless cash-in on a franchise people know".
Also, his assistant calling someone basic is making me think this is gonna be Emoji Movie levels of bad.

Is this what Carrey had to do in order to get his Netflix show produced? Or was he feeling nostalgic and wanted to do another pre - Truman Show performance?

Honestly? I expected worse.
Like, yeah, there are problems and not everything sticks but at the same time...it does sort of feel like a Sonic movie in some ways even if some of the added stuff’s a bit goofy and Jim Carrey seems to be really enjoying himself.
On the flip side, compare this to the first Detective Pikachu trailer and you can tell which one was heavily checked on by the IP owners and which one the IP owner accepted to cash in. You can also tell why Nintendo have a massive stake in the creative direction of Illumination’s Mario movie.
On the other other side, I can’t hate a 2019 blockbuster that casts Neal McDonough. I just can’t.

Looking at the design in motion, I can see where they’re taking influence from Modern Sonic given how leggy he is. The eyes could be a bit bigger, but I like it way more than the fan model. It’s as close to a Sonic that could plausibly exist while keeping the core elements of the character.
I think they’re going for a tone similar to Ant-Man or Shazam in regards to mixing the action and comedy together. Overall, I’m anticipating this a lot more than when it was first announced.

I just can't get over Sonic's design. He looks like he was drawn by someone who was not familiar with the character and the only resource he had to go off of was an excited 8 year old's description.
