"This isn't Mr. Belding talking to Zack Morris, this is Dennis Haskins talking to Mark-Paul Gosselaar!" "This is Mario Lopez talking to Mark-Paul Gosselaar. Last night at the movies you went too far." Zack held his own against a high level wrestler. Creative TOTAL buried Slater there.

This was the clearest example of WWE trying to milk the worked-shoot dynamic right after seeing how much it worked for Punk. Completely embarrassing.

I was fine with it personally because it's still within kayfabe that they use stage names sometimes. One of Punk's best strengths I feel was these worked shoots that just barely fall in the lines of kayfabe and can be explained within the in-universe narrative still. There's this sweetspot where he and Heyman (usually) knew where to fall into, as opposed to say late WCW that couldn't figure it out. This felt a lot more real than "Paul, I can't feel my Legs!!" from Vince when the Million Dollar Mania set fell down. Punk and "Uncle Paul" might have gone too far mocking Lawler's heart attack, but given Punk's situation at the time I understood. Made me sit up and lean toward the TV a bit more.

It didn't bug me. I thought it was less kayfabe breaking and more like "Let's drop the silly nicknames and get serious".

It didn't bug me. I thought it was less kayfabe breaking and more like "Let's drop the silly nicknames and get serious". It's too much for my taste. To me it retroactively makes other wrestlers look weird because in real life, if there was someone I worked with who I openly hated, how weird would it be if I kept referring to him as his roleplaying name? Why does Steve Austin hate Triple H so much that he's gonna throw him off a cliff in a car, but still play along and call him by his fun imaginary nickname? It sounds cutting edge in the moment to call wrestlers by their real names but for me, it causes me to think too much about how weird it all is and becomes a distraction. I didn't think these segments were very good for either guy, they seemed way too proud of their zingers, Triple H clung too hard to his "cool boss" persona, CM Punk was a few touches too indignant and didn't really have the same bite to him since he came back so soon and felt a bit hypocritical, hindsight makes it worse with how awful the whole storyline turned out.

I loathe line-blurring “this is REAL” stories

I love Punk, but yea, a lil cringey. Not a fan of Hunter and Punks promos at that time. Ya can tell they were going without a script and it's a prime example that sometimes..ya do need a script.

Maybe if it was just his own name, it would have been ok.
"This is Phil Brooks"
Since CM Punk is clearly a stage name. but Hunter Heart Helmsley is meant to be his actual name.

It was probably a bit too far, but it's probably not even Top 5 of things I would change about this point in time of the Punk/Hunter feud.

I thought it was incredibly stupid. Really in general I found Punk absurdly unlikable during that Triple H feud. As did I. Hunter brought Punk back, gave him a good contract and Punk pretty much continued to act like kind of a bratty shit. And to be fair, I didn't like Punk losing to Hunter either, because I felt it halted Punk's momentum (a little, not enough to totally kill it). But character-wise, I couldn't get behind him. That whole program between the two should never have been booked to begin with.
