It's sort of the anti-Last Jedi if Rotten Tomatoes is anything to go by. Mixed critical reviews, but generally positive audience reception (57%/86% split; it currently has the same audience reaction as The Force Awakens). Last Jedi OTOH was a 91%/43% split between critics and audiences, though I think the latter was taken before RT implemented its anti-trolling countermeasures so the audience rating is probably skewed a bit more negative than it should be.

Anti-troll countermeasures were implemented eight months ago, and 90% of all the audience scores took place within the first three months of TLJ's release, so it's safe to say the audience score isn't reliable. IMDb has an average rating of 7.1 from almost half a million votes, almost double the total number of votes on RT. Either the trolls ignored IMDb, or the percentage of people who didn't like it is a lot smaller than the Fandom Menace would have us believe.

When the fans talked about the leaked plot online, my first reaction was that it couldn't possibly be true, that it sounded like bad fanfic.
But....oh god, it WAS legit.

The HalfInTheBag review is out and ..*chefs kiss*. Even without seeing this movie, it’s chicken soup for the soul. Genuinely felt like an upbeat wake. “So wouldn’t she be empre-..” “LOOK ITS LANDO!” Mike on defending himself after saying however many years ago that JJ Abrams should direct the sequels: “I never said he should do it with the guy who wrote BATMAN V SUPERMAN!!..” “I liked Rey’s theme..” “...Rey’s theme? The f***?” All made me bust out laughing. I am content. There’s a Star Wars movie out that I may or may not watch one day, and that’s fine. Some people seem to really have enjoyed it and that’s fine. People hated it, that’s fine too. And then there’s The Mandalorian which is GREAT, so that’s fine too Bullet Clu-..Star Wars Is Fine!

That visual dictionary also confirmed something from Jedi Fallen Order heavily hinted at that makes me a little sad. (I'll put it in spoiler tags)
{Spoiler}The planet Starkiller Base was based out of was indeed Ilum, one of the major worlds Jedi got their lightsaber crystals from for thousands of years and originally a Legends creation.
Oh and as a nice Easter egg, the visual dictionary officially canonized a fan favorite character from Legends.
{Spoiler}Darth Revan, who a legion of Sith troopers is named after.

I think the legs will be reasonably solid and it'll break the billion without much sweat. Think it'll get to 1.1 billion, perhaps. It's positioned better on the calendar than Last Jedi, for one, although it'll lose some of that ground after Christmas.
Still expect it to be the lowest grossing of the three ST films. That still means a generous profit, natch.
Everything flies past at such a zip and there's so much hurriedly crammed in with little set-up that I'm curious to see it again (I did like the film, after all), yet not curious enough to see it at the cinema again. Bit of an odd reaction, perhaps, and not one that the filmmakers will really want a lot of people to have.

Well, the RLM review is basically a reminder of all the absurdities of this movie's plot and logic.
But it was fun.
And I still wanna see the movie again.
YOUR INSIDIOUS PLOT FOILED, PLINKETT!!!!

Biggest problem is the same one I have with a lot of the ST. Lots of interesting ideas, undercut by fan wank filmmaking by committee.

Is there generally a positive bias for audience reviews on RT? I know the only way I'd ever consider bothering to write a review is if I absolutely adored a movie.

People who bitch are generally more motivated to share their views and get the most attention.

I saw it on Saturday.
I enjoy Star Wars very much, but I will admit that I struggle to remember a lot of what went on in the previous movies. I really need to re-watch them and I desperately want to. With that said, I did notice some plot holes in this one.
Despite that...I actually enjoyed it for what it was. I don't think it was perfect by any means, but I was not bored at all and I really couldn't wait until the end (in a good way) to see what would happen.
Maybe when I go back and re-watch everything, I'll have a different opinion. But as a non-die hard fan who enjoys Star Wars, I left the movies OK with what I saw.

Listened to the soundtrack over the last day or so.
Very good, of course, but (a) I've retained little musically from my 2 viewings of this movie, (b) none of the trailer music is here, and (c) I suspect there was a LOT of editing regarding even the music of this movie. Little of what I heard on the CD seemed to even be in the movie in long forms....

This is the best John Williams soundtrack since Revenge of the Sith. It reuses a lot of familiar themes and motifs, but it does it so well and it really complements the movie. {Spoiler}I especially like the more heroic sounding take on Kylo Ren's theme after Ben turned back to the Light Side. There's a lot to absorb and there's definitely some stuff that made me go "wha?" but overall I enjoyed it.

I can admit this movie has no shortage of plot holes and weird choices, but...
It was easily my favorite Star Wars movie of the sequel trilogy. Granted Force Awakens left me in depressed silence and Last Jedi left me with annoyed fan rage, so it really wasn't that hard a metric to reach.
But it was nice to see a mostly original plot that wasn't directed by someone who hates the subject.
