When I was young I loved everything Robot related be it “Transformers”, “Reboot” hell I even loved that 80’s movie “Robot Jox” (I still do) so you an imagine my excitement when I first read about a little game called “Rise Of The Robots” Yes even all the BIG gaming magazine at the time were getting hyped for this (It was 3 years in the making).
The year was 1994 when “ROTR” was getting it’s release and as the day drew closer my excitement was building because what looked like the greatest fighter of all time (Look I was stupid when I was younger, OK) was about to be released.
When the big day finally came Sigh let’s just say that dissapointed and upset are HUGE understatments because THIS GAME SUCKS!!!!!!!!
Graphically this game is hard to fault because at the time it looked beautiful and I think it was one of the first games to use FMV (I’m not 100% sure though), The characters looked great too.
sadly the same can’t be said for their colors (mainly due to the limitations of the genesis so I’ll let that slide).
even the backgrounds were nice and futuristic and pleasing to the eye, So graphics wise it’s pretty good.
The plot was heavily inspired by such movies as Blade Runner, Metropolis and Terminator, centers on events in the Electrocorp factory in the fictional city of Metropolis 4, set in an unspecified time in the future.
When demands placed on Electrocorp as the world’s leading manufacturer and developer of advanced robotics had outstripped the company’s ability to run its massive Metropolis 4 plant efficiently, the decision was made to move ahead with the top-secret Leader Project. Devised to perfect a multi-task, ultra-intelligent, self-aware robot capable of managing every aspect of the plant’s day-to-day operations, the project was immediately given top priority, and as such, the Supervisor Droid was born.
Events quickly escalated as the Leader Project went awry and the Supervisor took control of Electrocorp's facilities. Infected by a strain of the EGO virus, mutiny broke out amongst the droids of the plant, effectively leaving the Supervisor in command of their actions. As a containment measure, operations were shut down at once under the guise of technical modification, and now, the ECO35-2 cyborg, (a.k.a. Coton), is sent in to neutralize the insurgent robots and crush the imminent outbreak into Metropolis 4.
A cyborg by design, his state-of-the-art technology renders him on par with his android counterparts, while his humanity leaves him one-step ahead of their thinking.
It’s your basic run of the mill Sci-fi movie with Robots plot so no complaints there either (I’m a sucker for renegade robot plots).
Sadly that’s were my praise for this game ends because the worst is yet to come.
The “gameplay” (notice the “ “) is the pits because everthing about it is terrible.
Firstly the guy you use (Cyborg) is a complete wussy who has about two moves and does little to no damage at all while the CPU does quite a bit and kicks your ass pissing you off in the process because it’s not fun to play it’s frustrating and you can only be the one guy, WHAT?!!!!!! A fighter with one playable character who is a complete pansy.
At least games like Street fighter, Mortal Kombat and Fatal fury gave you a choice of fighters to suit your style of play, so if you don’t like this dude then your stuck with him, what the hell were these guy’s thinking.
You do have some special moves in your (Limited) arsenal but they are so hard to pull off they are pointless so your left using the really weak punch and kick.
The Animation is terrible too, It’s slow, clunky and each animation for your attacks looks exactly the same regardless of the strength you use it’s the same for the AI, it’s completely worthless.
You’d think they would put in extra modes & features to make up for the Gameplay (or lack there of) but no all you have is story mode and two player mode.
Seaking of the two player mode this is the most pathetic multiplayer mode EVER here’s why, Player 1 can only be the Cyborg guy (WTF???!!!!!!) and player 2 has the choice of the other robots HOW THE F***K IS THAT FAIR.
Let me explain another reason why it’s retarded, the difficulty of this game goes on the character not the game, let me explain better Loader has low attack and Low defence wereas Sentry has High attack & High Defence it’s stupid, but seeing as your guy is a complete wuss it makes no difference.
During promotion the makers of this game were proudly boasting that Brian May of Queen was doing the soundtrack BUT only a short intro from The Dark appeared in the final release, while the actual in-game score was done by Mirage. Whereas May did in fact record a full soundtrack to the game, his record company EMI requested numerous delays, which consequently prompted Mirage to proceed without the music rather than having to reschedule the release date, and let me tell you the in game music is ATROCIOUS.
After it’s release the gaming magazines that hyped this atrocity slated it like it was the Adolf Hitler of video games (Not that I blame them), A Journalist by the name of Stuart Campbell wrote an open letter to Mirage about how bad the game was dspace.dial.pipex.com/ap2/comments/Stuart_Campbell/ROTR_letter.html.
Let me finish by saying that this is definatly my worst game ever, yes “Wand of Gamelion” & “E.T” are there but they didn’t piss me off as much as ROTR.
My verdict 2/10
