It's better than Attitude Era crowds. As raucous as they were, they were also a lot more toxic. No way attitude era had some of the biggest pops in history

I don't see why anyone has a problem with any chants. I enjoy it as part of the program and they are fun to go along with when watching live. I will say though, one chant I didn't like at an indy show and it may have even happened in WWE and I don't want to cross any boundaries here and get myself bannedered but it was "F (you know who/political)".

I don't know I just feel like wrestling fans occupy this very weird middle ground where we're exposed to a consistent product but not to a consistent audience. Local sports teams can come up with their own big, complex chants more easily because not only are the die-hards going to be there every game, but afterward they'll all be down at the pub. It's a different kind of atmosphere to your average episode of Raw running cities dotting across North America that in many cases are so culturally distinct that you're not really going to see a lot break away from the norm and what's already established. You also get audiences that for most shows are this very weird, chaotic mix of die-hard internet users and small children being led by confused parents. There's too much disconnect to really expect things outside of the norm to spread as consistent ideas, and WWE only plays in front of the kind of crowd that will set trends like that a few times a year. Beyond there it's down to individual guys to luck into something getting really over that's specific to them.
But on any actual consistent psychological level there is no such thing as a "natural chant" or a "natural cheer". Everything is artificial and either picked up from an audience or more deeply rooted in societal norms you don't even really notice as norms because of how ever-present they are.

It's interesting some people's attitudes towards chants. I mean I see people saying silly chants are disrespectful to the wrestlers but the other angle it could be seen from is that the wrestlers and promotions aren't really doing their jobs too well if the audience is more interested in entertaing itself.
Instead of getting angry you've got to go with the flow, I think during a Chris Jericho match once there was a Mexicans wave and instead of ignoring it he joined in with it with a big shit eating grin on his face, it quite quickly stopped after that kind of like when everyone was singing fandangos song and they accidentally killed it by having Jerry Lawler endorse it.

I think that one is mostly about getting under WWE's skin. The best way to get under WWE's skin would be to not buy a ticket, not subscribe to the network and not even talk about WWE. LOL! You KNOW they aren't gonna do that.

The worst crowds are the dead crowds that don't react to anything, so be thankful for generic chanting marks while you still have them!!

I still don't hate "WHAT" because while the chant itself isn't anything interesting, they can't stand it and it's what they deserve for putting on those awful rambling promos.
Most fan participation doesn't bother me but I do think "This is Awesome" is a little cringey. Plus anything disrespectful, sexist, etc. One thing I don't have a problem with though, is stuff like chanting 'Albert" at Tensai or "Husky Harris" at Bray Wyatt. If you have someone with a new gimmick who is obviously just some past character retooled I think it's fair game and it's on WWE and the wrestler to figure out how to deal with it. I think I remember Bray Wyatt saying something like "He's still here, he's my vessel" or something which I thought was a nice way to handle that. Tensai was just totally botched though.

"This is awesome" chants are annoying
Plus I feel like they could ruin a moment
Cna you imagine Hogan/Warrior afcing off at The Rumble and the crowd chanting "THIS IS AWESOME"
or when Austin hit the stunner on Mcmahon for the first time
or when Hogan joined NWO
it wouldve been so cringy

Hands down "This is awesome" is the worse. It became a problem post Mania 25 after Taker/HBK. The chant is always used after a nearfall that was BLATANTLY OBVIOUS. WTF is awesome about a dude kicking out? That's just people having a good time. Perhaps they should have a Commentary w/false crowd booing and cheering at all thr right momemts audio option

I miss when the crowd would just pop. Just pop making generic noise, rather than a community chant? I find that worrying. If they're doing it during boring parts just to be obnoxious that's one thing, or when they chanted USA at Muhammed, but people saying "it's so cringey to corporately express specific enjoyment " miss the point.

That is mostly due to booking and most of the wrestlers these days being horrible at character work

I'm really moody when it comes to fan reactions to stuff. Sometimes I like huge rebellions like the Daniel Bryan stuff, but ideally the most helpful a crowd can be is when they're engaged in what's actually happening in front of them; cheer the faces, boo the heels. In some crowds I sense a strong resistance in coming across as passengers and more interested in trying to be ahead of the game, not getting tricked and taking more of a Statler and Waldorff position, where the shows have more of a "dance for me" attitude instead of a cooperation. But televised wrestling is tricky because it does shoot to be more complicated than at live events, and sometimes shows just get so conceptual that it's hard to even play along with.
The best times I've had in a wrestling audience is at local indy shows because it really is a brass tacks basic ass presentation. Someone comes out and calls the fans names, someone comes out and defends you, even if the quality of wrestlers were lesser, it's just funner to look a guy in the eyes and boo him to death for being mean to us. Stuff like old TNA shows where literally every match everyone's just chanting "let's go this guy, let's go that guy," never picking a side and never taking a breath from chanting, it's good for fans to have a good time since that's the whole point but as a viewer it's not really satisfying.
I can deal with "this is awesome" and "fight forever" and I love creative chants. Like others said, chanting "you deserve it" at heels getting what's coming is great. There was a show where Cena had to be the Nexus' butler and fans chanted "never give up." It's so much more fun when fans and the show work together.
