I love HHH and I think between 1999 and 2002 he's the best wrestler. I'm a massive HHH fan and apologist.
However, HHH was especially terrible these years 1995 - 1999. He's so f***ing boring, even after the Cactus Jack table piledriver he has to latch onto Shawn Michaels to make something of himself.

Until he dropped DX and went totally solo, he's just there.
Once he got to be on his own, he was awesome.

Double post sorry.
What sparked HHH to become amazing in 1999?

I think by mid 1999 he was pretty damn good. But yeah up until that point, it was rough. 1997 especially. Beethoven’s 9th symphony era Triple H is one of my top channel changers of all time. He could make any 10 minute match feel like 4 hours.

I wouldn't agree with terrible, but he was certainly still finding his footing. And without hesitation I would say he was the least over member of DX and had the least to do with it being any good.

He impressed me the moment he stepped foot in the WWF. I thought he was phenomenal and was a natural at pro wrestling. I actually think he got worse when he buffed up later on.

I'll give you 95-98 (although, he did have the classic ladder match with Rock in 98, so not all bad there)... but 99 had Triple H cut arguably the best promo of his career, with the "I am the f***ing game, JR" interview. He also transitioned into an amazing look, with the trunks, more toned body and beard.
I'm not even somewhat of a big fan of Haitch, but he really improved himself in 99 character wise, even if he didn't have amazing matches every week. Which I can forgive due being the Attitude Era, where almost nobody was having great matches every week then.

Always liked him but his booking was all over the place early on and the blue blood gimmick was terrible really. One he hit DX he got some consistency of character at least. Always a good worker and improved throughout that time.

I'd say 95-96 was when he was average at best. 97 started seeing him improve in his feuds with Goldust and Foley but he was still having some dud matches on Raws. 98 was when he started showing signs of becoming a solid worker with the major highlight being his classic with Rock at Summerslam 1998.

I mean, it is pretty hard to just throwaway the entire DX run. In fact, it is wrong. Hard don’t agree.

Double post sorry. What sparked HHH to become amazing in 1999? He was a good heel during that time, but in some ways it kind of felt that he was really trying be pushed to main event level, or maybe the bookers were really trying to squeeze him in there with no proper build, except for maybe the feud with The Rock in May. I mean, yes, you can argue that The Rock had not had a full two years when he elevated, but the creative team saw that he was destined for the spot, especially with his level of charisma, so it was not much of surprise how he went from a mid-carder with the IC title to main eventer in such a short amount of time. Triple H, on the other hand, turned heel and was doing angles related to betraying DX, but then came yet another Rock feud. I am not sure if he was quite ready for that push in 1999 just yet. It wasn't until his matches with Mick Foley in early 2000 that he was solidified as a main eventer.

I thought he was great from mid 97 to early 98, and still enjoy his work from 95 and 96.

I started to like Triple H when he and The Rock started their first major feud. They just worked really well together and it really helped make the midcard feel like a significant part of the show versus something insignificant compared to the main event.

He could make any 10 minute match feel like 4 hours. This is exactly how I feel. 1997 was just a terrible year for him. So boring. And he was feuding with Rock, Goldust and Mankind. Rock wasn't there yet, but you almost have to TRY to be boring working with the other two guys at that time.

I only liked him in 98. I could do without every other year of his career.
