It is pretty awful, but I'm a fairly soft touch on Spider-man. If he's swinging around and whatnot, I'll at least enjoy it on that level.

Its going to be pretty hard to beat Spider-Man 2 any time soon Both Mary Jane's character and Kirsten Dunst's performance are HORRIBLE in that film. I don't care how cool the Dr Octopus fights are, I will never consider it a classic because of how awful the melodrama is in that one.

ASM2 is almost completely unmemorable to me except for what happened that made the movie lose me.
The German Doctor with a Gimp.
Seriously, what was that? And you could have put Otto Octavius in there, and you go with...this.
Disney was absolutely right to get Spidey back under their banner.

What's even stranger about that is Dr. Kafka was a female supporting character in the spider books for years, and they inexplicably made her Dieter from Sprockets.

Love his notes. It’s a lot of honing in, cutting fat and getting to the heart of the matter. Or what should matter.
I thought ASM was rough but had sequel potential (kinda like Homecoming, tbh) but ASM2 was just a f***load of camp. And the series wanted to go way too ham on his parents. I get why but it wasn’t needed. I groaned out loud at that scene where Peters investigating shit and they play some alt poppy song of the time. Just straight up cringe.
Film might of been better just introducing Harry (not as Goblin), keeping Woodley as MJ, not killing off Gwen but transitioning MJ as the love interest and having Electro as the sole Villain.

Peter's parents shouldn't be important. Even in the books making them secret agents and stuff was a mistake. It weakens the everyman quality of Pete if his parents were spies or scientists or whatever. In fact, you don't really need them to ever appear at all. For all intents and purposes, May&Ben are his parents.

ASM would have been way better off not revisiting the origin. It’s already a part of American pop culture and it had already been done really, really well less than ten years earlier. You don’t want to continue the Raimi films, cool. You don’t need to start from zero and tell the same story, with the same beats, to almost the same audience again.

I'll use this thread as an excuse to talk up why Feige is a gift to geekdom: he's a film exec who is also a comic book nerd.
That is an amazing, and dangerous combo. He's basically the exec who gives a shit. Someone like Geoff Johns knows the comics, but can't play the Hollywood Game. Someone like Jon Peters, who knows the Hollywood game, fails at knowing the comics and goes with things like Superman not having his cape or being able to fly, and fighting a giant spider.
But Feige is both. He knows where to compromise, but what to keep true. He has perfected the art of taking comic book culture, and balancing it out that normal moviegoers can enjoy it, but nerds can still go "Oh wow, that IS like the comic!" Something like the first Iron Man movie can seem true to the comic, or, for Ebert, feel like a spiritual reboot of Robocop. The First Avenger tapped into the WW2 dramas people loved to watch in the good ol' days. These were careful, judicious decisions that did not seem to take risk but, in fact, took MANY big risks on Feige's part: making Thor more comical in Ragnarok, adapting the Winter Soldier and Civil War arcs instead of Serpent Society, and taking a chance on C-listers like Guardians of the Galaxy and Dr. Strange.
If Feige ever leaves the MCU, it will be worse off for it. He is one in a billion. No other exec could possibly achieve what Feige has - at most, they can only imitate him.

You absolutely nailed it 100%. I don't see Feige leaving the MCU as long as it continues being successful. Disney purchasing Fox which expands the MCU even more just gives them that much more material to give Feige a forever seat.

I mean... first and foremost they forgot the movie.
pretty much everything was... look it's Felicia... like Felicia Hardy! how about a Black Cat Movie... and the sinister six are a thing... won't that be cool to see... hey look it's X we can make this a spinoff movie... and this movie...
not to mention they started advertising the damn thing like a year before it came out... and not like here's a minor teaser... like no they had full trailers out like a year before it came out... and then commercials of him with the USPS and other things when it finally came out I felt like I saw almost the entire movie...

"Sucked" is a strong word. It's one of the weaker Spider-Man films, certainly, and they bit off more than they could chew in one film. I also hate that they were so goddamn beholden to the (well, the OTHER) Snap. It just... wasn't needed, at all.
Sony still is kind of on my shit list for having the audacity to internally blame all of this on Andrew Garfield. Yeah, it's his fault, and not bad spending on your advertisement, or trying to make 2 1/2 movies into one, that couldn't have hurt things any, along with have really unrealistic expectations for how it'd perform, no sirree. It's all him, somehow.
As for best film, it's Homecoming, for me. Nothing against Tobey and Andrew, but Tom nailed it in a way they couldn't. Beyond that, goddamn, Michael Keaton has been on his game for years now. It's just a shame Infinity War didn't have Aunt May say, "-UCK!". Also, Karen is wonderful.

That too... they somehow thought they'd make Avengers money with this... when Solo Spider-men movies have never gotten anywhere near that and hte first movie did worse than all 3 that came before it...

Wish he could have given some notes like this for Age Of Ultron. He did. That's why Joss Whedon threw a hissy fit and quit before the promotional tour for the film.

ASM2 made me so sad, especially since ASM1 while not a GREAT film, was still enjoyable and had a lot of potential not to fall in the same traps with Gwen's portrayal that the comics did. Especially since Emma Stone was a really good Gwen; much better than Kirsten Dunst was as Mary Jane. And then they followed through with her fridging in ASM2 in a really stupid way.
At least she'll be there as Spider-Woman in Into The Spiderverse, which looks great.
