No way WWE get away with an Austin character calling someone a "S" "Hitman".
He was way too vulgar then, but I guess at that time, people accepted it.
There has to be no way, no chance in hell, any of the stuff Austin would do would fly today?
Guns? Violence? Blood? Swearing? Middle Fingers?

I voted no. 97 Austin was still a bit wild, but would still be fine for today. He barely said B**** in 97, and I heard that word said last week on TLC. Now, 98 Austin is a whole different animal.

Yeah, I definitely feel like Austin could pass for an edgy, unpredictable character today the way he did in 96/97.

WWE are the ones who decided to go PG, not the audience. I can't think of one thing specific to Steve Austin that would be too "vulgar" for the audience. People didn't just become puritans and start shunning naughty words, WWE changed itself tonally, and the only thing Austin did on-screen that'd really get any different reaction now is stunnering women and. Hey you know what? Actually super not necessary or even an important part of his character

Bayley of all people was clearly heard saying shit on camera this year.
It wasnt the audiences choice to go PG it was the companies, i am not sure if Austin would be too vulgar but maybe wouldn't respond the same since times are different

People are entirely too sensitive these days. A character like Austin would have one half screaming about the children, and the other half scurrying for their safe spaces because the mean man said a bad word.
...I hate the world these days.

Doesn't matter what happens in the real world as the online minority that gets upset about everything is the most vocal one and thus heard the loudest without actually saying a word. The whole thing is pretty much another form of info wars, but way more effective.

The Pillman gun incident nearly got them kicked off the air, also many parents complained because it upset there kids.
Can we please stop pretending being offended is a new invention?

I mean, the audience still loves all of these things when they end up happening, so no.

Can we please stop pretending being offended is a new invention? It isn't but you can't deny it's gotten completely out of control the past few yrs.

The entire "triggered snowflakes and their safe spaces" narrative is just melodramatic bullshit that tends to be unintentional self reflection from those who stick to that the closest.

Nah. In fact we need someone who's as intense and as pissed off as '97 Steve.

Austin would easily be the most popular person in the company with today's crowds if he was doing the same stuff.
It terrifies me when I think about how this writing team would handle him, though.

I almost went in this direction on my first post but I was really, really hoping this nonsense wouldn't happen and we could just have a nice discussion, but clearly it's gone down the expected road so no I guess we're doing it then. Fine, let's play The Offended Pussy Boogeyman game again, here's the long form dispelling of all this nonsense before it goes too much further because maybe if we put a stop to this before page one it's gonna be okay. Gonna make this super clear here: people are not offended like you think they are and if you think Steve Austin is going to make people run to their "safe space" then you both don't know what that means and have been tricked by outrage mongers whose livelihood depends on convincing you that people you disagree with are bad.
Game of Thrones gets four times the ratings WWE does and it is a show so rapey that it actually makes sex scenes from the book that were originally consensual less consensual in the show. And it's received criticism for that. It's still on TV. Still pulling in 10 million viewers. Still a major thing people talk about. If THE SJWS held some kind of immense power and influence over entertainment that wouldn't be happening.
There is a cottage industry of Youtube personalities and news article headlines written for articles the writers know people won't actually read on through for context that is built around the idea that there's this whole group of people who are easily offended scream babies yelling about everything. Who take half-understood or out of context tidbits and blow them up, who take one single kinda dumb tweet written by one person out of millions of internet users and then applies it broadly as an ideological principle to an entire segment of the political spectrum.
I have witnessed with my own eyes on this very board threads wherein people pre-empted the offense of others with complaints about how everyone is easily offended when nobody in the thread was actually being offended. Who just wanted to post and let everyone know they were above it all and judging all the sensitive babies like it was going to impress someone. It seems to me that the people eager to complain about how everyone wants to be offended these days want people to be offended and want everyoen to know that they personally think it's bad people are so easily offended. Who take any criticism as outrage and complain about echo chambers from a weird perpetual feedback loop of complaining to each other about how easily offended everyone is.
There's no glory in propping up an army of strawmen to try and position yourself as better than. Steve Austin says "Shitman" and that's going to offend modern audiences? That's nonsense. People crying and running to their safe spaces? Pure goddamn nonsense. It's all empty nonsense meant to puff yourself up, and it exposes a malformed worldview removed from anything real or understandable. If you're going to throw yourself onto your sword at the idea that someone might theoretically become upset because of something you like, and that has to reflect on the world and its woes then sorry to say it but its your sensibilities that are the delicate ones.
Don't want to hear anything about facts over feelings if you're overlooking the facts raised about swearing and rating in this thread to complain about your feelings about people getting offended.

Austin did things like call Bret Hart "Shitman" when the things we're ACTUALLY pissed about these days is casual homophobia and racism, so he'd get some shit because he engaged in both of those but not for that dumb crap.
I am so sick and tired of these threads. Sorry it's so hard to think about other people, I guess. I'm glad so much of this thread is calling this opinion stupid, because man, I am done respecting this opinion.

When you have a company still cussing, making homophobic references, displaying nepotism, showing sexual references, Austin is probably one of the only major stars who can go out there and have his material be pretty much the same sans the gun and the middle finger. It's Steve Austin, it's not 97 DX or Goldust.
