If he debuted with that character? I can see it causing some tension, as there is no character quite as intense as he is. Flushing peoples head down the toilet, swearing much more as part of his speech rather than simply for dramatic effect.....
And the pillman/gun angle would be almost guaranteed to raise a few eyebrows on social media.
But that's the nature of Austin, he would cause waves no matter what era he debuted in. His character was that angry, that disruptive that you had to take note of him, even if it was purely as a heel.
Now Austin's sand people comment? Beating Lita with a chair? Probably guaranteed to draw a LOT more attention today than it did at the time.

Austin in 96 and 97 was f***ing awesome. The intensity and conviction he showed was off the charts.
No one since, not even CM Punk, had that much believablity in their promos. I don't even think it's a "WWE is too scripted these days" thing. It's just an "Austin was just that damn great" thing.
Check out his "You treat me like a dog and expect me to smile...you remind me of a jackass!" promo.
That promo gives me the adrenaline rush like a goddamn heavy metal song and it's not even really brought up much among his all time best segments.
That right there...that character could work in any era.
