A disgusting unprovoked assault. He should be facing a fine and a lengthy suspension. Which one? That's for the WWE Universe to decide on Cyber Sunday.

this is leading to AJ/HHH at mania isn't it? HHH needs his mania match, and AJ needs a fresh opponent.

Not really. Triple H, with his "BIGGEST BADASS EVUURR-AH!" style, chews up people and spits them out. Dude is not brilliant at putting people over and while AJ is an excellent wrestler, he'll probably be eaten up too.
And what is there to be gained from beating a dude in the twilight of his career? It's not going to elevate AJ any more.
Lets look at Hunter's matches in the last few years...
Lost to Bryan, putting him over strong. Lost to The Shield twice as part of Evolution, putting them over strong. Lost to Roman, putting him over strong. Lost to Seth, putting him over strong. Lost to Kurt and Ronda, putting Ronda over strong. He didn't even get his win back off Cena at the Greatest Rumble.
When he did win the title, it was at the Rumble and done so Roman could beat the big bad at Mania.
When Hunter was full time, he won a lot, but he was one of the main men. When it comes to feuds now, he loses and it still matters. A feud with AJ would be great, the match would be great and AJ would go over.
You missed out the matches with Lesnar and Sting. In 2016, Trips didn't put over Roman strong AT ALL.
In that match, Trips disregarded the story being told in the buildup to the match and the No DQ stip and instead of a brawl where the two dudes just beat the bejesus out of each other, he wrestled in his usual style and chewed up Roman in an awful Main Event of Wrestlemania in which the only face pop that Roman got was spearing Steph.
As for Seth, yes he put Seth over, but the match wasn't excellent and it didn't make Seth look that good, though considering at that time Seth still hadn't redeemed himself by making it up to Dean Ambrose, it was an uphill struggle elevating Seth at that stage considering that his face turn consisted of Owens being chosen over him.
As for a feud with AJ, it could be good, but then again, I remember the feuds with CM Punk and Randy Orton. The thought of AJ getting chewed up and spat out by a Triple H that cannot deliver the goods anymore isn't a pleasant one.

I'd laugh so hard if they'd actually went on with an angle where Vince realizes he's a masochist and stalks AJ for the next couple of weeks trying to get beaten up again, complete with actual dialogues from Family Guy. Like, next week AJ comes into Vince's office to apologize.
"Oh, Vince, there you are. I'm so sorry I hit you. I promise I will never lay a hand on you again." "Well, let's not make any rash decisions. I mean, I did provoke you. Come on, AJ, hit me! Beat the crap out of me! Step on my cubes, dammit!"
Then, a week later on SD: "AJ, look! I've drawn your former boss Dixie Carter on your locker room's wall. Punish me!" "Vince, you've really gotta stop... huh, looks like Dixie Carter... You really got to stop this crap. You're getting on my nerves." "Well, you know what'll ease your stress pal? Slap me across the face like a bitch!" "It's all right. I'll get some Windex." "Come on! Discipline me! Make me wear bra and panties, spit Asian mist in my eyes! Violate me with a kendo stick!.. My God, I really do have problems, don't I?"

He beat Lesnar and Sting sure. He hardly damaged their stock though. A loss is not a burial. They were well established and neither lost a step as evidenced by the fact Brock is still winning titles and Sting went right into a feud with Seth. The quality of the matches is coming down to personal preference here. I feel they were all great matches and the winners (Roman, Seth) were put over strong. In the long run, they have Mania wins over Hunter. Even if you don't enjoy the match, to imply they were chewed up and somehow came out of the match damaged is unfair I feel. Their overall booking might have been weak, but the matches achieved what was intended. It's kind of whitewashed now but Roman did get a massive pop when he won according to people at the venue. The crowd mics had been turned down for the broadcast. Punk and Orton (another Mania match I liked) were as mentioned in my initial reply were Hunter was much more active so it's a different frame of reference. I concede that as a huge fan, I'm likely to enjoy whatever happen though.

I liked how it made Vince feel like some kind of Zeus or Odin character who is beyond the whole heel/face dynamic and just feeds off of the blood lust of his creations.

I gotta say, Vince being a huge AJ fan is something I never saw coming. He’s everything Vince ususally doesn’t go for: smaller, big name from the indies, wasn’t homegrown. Yet he’s been pretty protected since day one and between the title reign and tonight it’s obvious Vince is a huge fan. It’s been a really pleasant surprise. After watching AJ on the Stone Cold Podcast, it's really not a huge surprise that Vince loves AJ. They grew up in almost the exact same situation. Both dirt poor, living in a trailer with abusive parents. They both were fighters in their younger years and AJ still has that fighting mentality that Vince loves which is lacking in the younger wrestlers.

Ranted for a few weeks about it, crashed NXT and then nothing for several months until 'Mania season started and HHH decided to finally give half a crap about him. In that time he did nothing of substance and just spun his wheels. There was no development or anything. Even if he won the match, the absentee feud hurt him I think because people had no reason to care about him for roughly six months.

This story feels like starting a book in the middle stuff is happening but it doesn’t make much sense and it would be sooooo much better if we started at the beginning and when you have as much tv as they do there’s no excuse to tell stories like this.I’m not a fan of the elderly either but you can’t attack them on Christmas there’s no couth in that.
