Talents who were either "home grown" or became major stars in America via WCW platform: Sting Goldberg The Giant Lex Luger DDP Harlem Heat Steiner Brothers Vader Chris Benoit Eddie Guerrero Chris Jericho Dean Malenko Cactus Jack Brian Pillman Rey Mysterio Ron Simmons Johnny B. Badd Dustin Rhodes Considering they were only around for 12 years or so, that's not a bad list. Why do some people say that WCW wasn't able to create stars of their own? The problem is they put a cap on a lot of those guys in terms of how far they were willing to let them go, and it’s why most of them deserted the promotion. WCW might have “made” Chris Jericho in the United States, for instance, but adamantly denying him a shot at the top of the card no matter how over he was ensured he was bailing as soon as he could.

WCW gave a whole slew of guys an opportunity to showcase their talents that would never have gotten that opportunity elsewhere, Vince saw Jericho as only fit to play The Goon character prior to his WCW run for cripes sake, but people are more than willing to search for reasons as to why the success they had there didn't count because people still want to buy into the WWF/E's narrative that their success was built on stealing WWF talent and guys that Paul Heyman 'discovered', that had worked on WCW events prior to that. Sure, some of the guys Eric snagged from ECW had made appearances in WCW before, but it wasn’t until after Paul let them go out and get over in ECW that got WCW to say “Huh, maybe these guys are more then just jobbers”. It’s not so much that Paul discovered the Benoit’s, Eddy’s and Rey’s of the world, it’s that he gave them they’re first big break in the US which led to WCW realising they could build the mid card around these guys. Although, I will give Eric and WCW credit for Jericho for sure. He grew as a performer way more in WCW then ECW. Jericho promo in 1996 vs 1999 was night and day, and that came from being able to go out “sink or swim” style and develop. If he goes to WWF in 1995/1996, Goon gimmick or not, I think his career stalls out.

Do Road Warriors qualify for such thing? Truth be told they wrestled longer in WWE than in WCW and were probably at the peak of their popularity as LOD but they indeed started in WCW. The Road Warriors where in Crockett from 85-89.

Iffy. It's true they did have a national stage for the first time in WCW, but it lasted less than a year before they moved on to WWF for a much more substantial run. You meant AWA not WCW, right? Personally, when they left the WWF to go to WCW, that worked out so much better for them. They fit in.

I like the idea that ECW in 94/95, was a national promotion and a close third to WCW and the WWF, and was clearly the thing that put guys on WCW's radar, and not their stints in Japan, the word of guys like Konnan or the WCW promoted shows that guys like Benoit had worked long before stepping foot in ECW.

I think the same about Cactus Jack and his time in Texas but understand the argument being made.

Not to go completely off topic but WCW had some pretty awesome theme music during the mid 1990s when some of these "home grown" guys were getting over. Late 1980s, early 1990s NWA/WCW had some generic music with most sounding alike but around 1993 to 1996 they had some original, very cool themes. They may not have been as iconic as WWF themes but definitely pretty good for the time and made the entrances that much better.

Wait, so is this for people who were home grown AND became major stars? Or just people who might or might not have been home grown that became a major star while in WCW? Because only about four of the names so far fit BOTH of these. Most of them are by no means home grown.

Waltman/Lightning Kid was the main reason a lot of us kept up with the GWF.
