But it's a punch with a pose. Cena's been wrestling in WWE for 16 years, he's thrown a lot of punches, he's never won with a posing punch. Why is his punch suddenly powerful enough to finish someone because he strikes a pose? It doesn't exactly fit with continuity. And maybe expecting continuity is too much when they can barely keep continuity from month to month, but honestly, this isn't how writing and storytelling works, things don't just happen because they happen now and that's the way it is. It's CHIKARA-tier silliness this, and WWE is not a comedy promotion like CHIKARA where it fits the overall company aesthetic.I know that I sound like the most stereotypical IWC smart mark that wrestlers love to mock by saying "I just can't take this seriously" but I can't, it's really, really dumb. Like when Big Show suddenly was able to knock people out with punches after years of punching normally, but at least when Big Show's punches suddenly became match winners, you could say well he's a 500lb giant so maybe he just learned to put his weight behind punches. This is a Saturday Night Fever backhand. This is basically meme wrestling for GIFs on twitter from non-viewers going "LOL that Wacky John Cena doing that Wacky Pro Wrestling!". I really don't get the sudden nostalgic love-in for Cena. I haven't missed him while he's gone, I'm not caring that he's back, and I'll be fine when he finlly quits for Hollywood full time. So no, it's not some "silly wrestling WOOWHOOOO CHIKARA YEAH WRASSLIN YALL" thing like you're making it out to be. It makes perfect sense when he explains it and actually it makes more sense compared to 99% of the wrestling moves we see. That's all well good and all John, but it still looks goofy as shit and kinda looks lame when a wrestler has to sell it like they just died. To me it's not really enough, it's kind of a crowd killer if I'm honest. If it were a regular move, fine, I don't feel this at all. Like imagine all that build and technical talk for a move and then the dude striking a pose and dinking a dude with his hand. I can suspend my disbelief in wrestling but this just makes me shake my head at Cena more so than I did before, it's lame.

I can’t figure out if you actually think it’s called the “Lightening Fist” or if you’re just misspelling ”Lightning”. “Lightening” would be stupid, but that’s not the name. The move itself is goofy as f***, but it would work for me as a spot if it weren’t used as a finisher. I have room in my wrestling life for a little bit of levity. I did fudge the spelling a bit, I corrected it And that's the issue, it's being used as his finisher. It's what he pinned Elias with, it's what he ended Almas with in the match on Smackdown, it's... really lame, and punching finishers as a whole are usually really lame unless the wrestler can really sell them.

I don't mind the move that much (though it's more suited to be used as a mid-match move as the opponent is returning from an Irish Whip), but if he wanted to get a pop out of a Baji Quan-inspired move, he should have gone for the geek pop by using an Akira (Virtua Fighter) style back/shoulder check.

I can suspend my disbelief in wrestling but this just makes me shake my head at Cena more so than I did before, it's lame. I've seen a lot of fights in my life and I've also seen a plethora of martial arts films through my life since my family's big on those. I've seen punches like that knock guys out more times than I can count. The difference is Cena's pose in the beginning but the thing with the pose is that it's a mix of American performance and harnessing your focus and the kiai. It's a sports entertainment version of whenever someone's about to punch through a board and they do a similar pose before doing it.
At the end of the day you can think it's lame all you want but a move like that actually makes more sense and is believable especially when Cena says actual martial artists in Jackie Chan's studio helped him with it. Whether you think a punch from a martial artist can knock you out is a different story.
I'd take something like that then 99% of the things we see today in wrestling because it's connected to martial arts and I've seen it. If you ask me if I'd take that over Cena throwing someone off his back and then someone counting to 3? I'm definitely going with the punch.

Cena can't do one single move that actually looks good. His punches have always been shitty and now he's finishing matches with his shittiest one. At least Alexa Bliss' punch looks great, even if she shouldn't be finishing matches with it.

Ah, I only saw the video of him just doing the punch. That's fine then... My only quibble with it is that if that's how his MOD will go from now on then the AA, a move that has been treated as death for the better part of the last 15 years, now has guys popping up from it right away to transition into what amounts to a comedy spot. Cena never really finished anyone with the shoulder tackle/five knuckle shuffle/AA sequence... hell most of the times that AA got reversed. And that's the issue, it's being used as his finisher. It's what he pinned Elias with, it's what he ended Almas with in the match on Smackdown, it's... really lame, and punching finishers as a whole are usually really lame unless the wrestler can really sell them. He knocked Almas out of the ring with it, after he did his big come back sequence...

Awful. Cena's one of the last legit stars and even he is starting to incorporate this "i know it's fake too" forth wall shit in his act.

That video makes it slightly more tolerable, or rather would if we ever got this on TV, but we won't. At Super Showdown we got Cole being all smarky "HERE IT IS THE 6TH MOVE OF DOOM!",I have zero faith in this being presented as anything other than a meme spot. And honestly, even if it was it just still doesn't work for me. It just...yeah. It grates on me as a spot. And for the record- I used to really like Chikara, so it's not even that I automatically don't like comedic spots in wrestling. And I've done martial arts for about half my life, so it's not like I'm unaware that in a shoot fight, one punch with proper technique can KO somebody. But in the theatre that is wrestling, it doesn't work for me, for John Cena. I could actually buy it for an Alistair Black more than Cena, because the presentation would be different and story to it would be much more apparent. But hey there we are. For people who like the spot more power to them. But for me it's just another in a long list of little things that reminds me why WWE isn't really for me.

Funny don't draw money guys You know the Rock is one of the most profitable stars the company ever had... and he got over mostly doing comedy stuff. Ditto Dorky Kurt Angle, and Mick Foley, and Edge... And a host of other main event stars.

The rock this is your life sure... But Austin and the Beer truck was pure comedy as well. Unless you really think Vince swimming in beer was something other than a farce. Funny doesn't draw money is something Cornette said because he's mad its not 1983 anymore.

You've been conditioned by the WWE to believe that Cena, even when he trains in Jackie Chan's Shanghai Training Center for months with masters and students can't do something like this. The final line about it not being for you is of course your opinion but that says everything.

Angle got over when he turned into a mostly serious main eventer. Same with Edge in 06. Foley did comedy but when it came to his matches he was always dangerous and did hardcore stuff. None of those guys comedy moves in their main event matches from what I recall.

So you admit that Comedy can make money. Secondly, Kurt Angle being a Comedic Dork is what separated him from any number of "REAL WRESTLER" flops that came before him. Foley made the most money in his career as a guy who pulled a sock out of his pants. You are saying there is nothing comedic about this? or any of these?
