Hooooly shit... I thought Cena's haircut made him lamer, but that shit... that shit is brutal.
I know he did it at Super Showdown but I had no clue it had a name, a name as lame as THAT. This man strikes a Power Ranger Pose before lightly jabbing his opponent, it's called THE LIGHTENING FIST like it's the most amazing thing in the world, and it's treated like a finisher of all things.
I mean way to make Alexa Bliss's punch of doom look credible man... Saitama you ain't. Your Springboard Stunner also looks less bad in comparison to whatever this phase is...
At least Becky punked him out tonight.

I can’t figure out if you actually think it’s called the “Lightening Fist” or if you’re just misspelling ”Lightning”.
“Lightening” would be stupid, but that’s not the name. The move itself is goofy as f***, but it would work for me as a spot if it weren’t used as a finisher. I have room in my wrestling life for a little bit of levity.

Yeah, when Cena was promoting it pre his return it was clearly meant to be a joke... I'm fine with it as a joke kinda signature but he shouldn't actually be finishing people with it... maybe if he did it after another big move or something.

The only logical conclusion to Cena having a move called the Lightning Fist is a WrestleMania match with "Lightning Foot" Jerry Flynn. Flynn is long overdue for a WrestleMania moment.

I like the move mostly because it can be used in a lot of different ways. It can be used as a setup to a finisher, it can be used as a fake out, it can be used as a signature and it could be used as a standard finisher. What I think it's most useful for however is that it can be used to end a long even match. Say Cena and an opponent put on a great 20 minute match, each having a counter to the other's move and then the AA doesn't work. Cena can then hit a surprise move ending the match that works similar to this. He can hit it, fall on his opponent, match ends which protects both guys compared to something like the AA where Cena's clearly the one with the upper hand. With this move though, it makes Cena look more lucky getting the win. It would work well. Besides that it's wrestling. If I can believe a lot of what I see here then I can believe this.

But it's a punch with a pose. Cena's been wrestling in WWE for 16 years, he's thrown a lot of punches, he's never won with a posing punch. Why is his punch suddenly powerful enough to finish someone because he strikes a pose? It doesn't exactly fit with continuity. And maybe expecting continuity is too much when they can barely keep continuity from month to month, but honestly, this isn't how writing and storytelling works, things don't just happen because they happen now and that's the way it is. It's CHIKARA-tier silliness this, and WWE is not a comedy promotion like CHIKARA where it fits the overall company aesthetic. I know that I sound like the most stereotypical IWC smart mark that wrestlers love to mock by saying "I just can't take this seriously" but I can't, it's really, really dumb. Like when Big Show suddenly was able to knock people out with punches after years of punching normally, but at least when Big Show's punches suddenly became match winners, you could say well he's a 500lb giant so maybe he just learned to put his weight behind punches. This is a Saturday Night Fever backhand. This is basically meme wrestling for GIFs on twitter from non-viewers going "LOL that Wacky John Cena doing that Wacky Pro Wrestling!". I really don't get the sudden nostalgic love-in for Cena. I haven't missed him while he's gone, I'm not caring that he's back, and I'll be fine when he finlly quits for Hollywood full time.

It makes perfect sense when he explains it and actually it makes more sense compared to 99% of the wrestling moves we see.

Cena gets lamer and lamer by the month. I totally think they should lean into this. Suddenly his shirts are tucked into his bugle boy jorts, his glasses are hanging around his neck by a string, and contract signings for PPV matches take forever because he reads the fine print and keeps frowning at his checkbook.

Ah, I only saw the video of him just doing the punch. That's fine then... My only quibble with it is that if that's how his MOD will go from now on then the AA, a move that has been treated as death for the better part of the last 15 years, now has guys popping up from it right away to transition into what amounts to a comedy spot.
