We did one for games, now movies. Didnt Disney put Prince Caspian out at the same time Speed Racer and the first Iron Man were in theaters?

Poor UHF got slaughtered by the ridiculously strong 1989 summer movie season which had the likes of Batman, the Last Crusade, Ghostbusters II, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and Lethal Weapon 2.
I'm still convinced someone in Disney arranged for Winnie the Pooh to go against the last Harry Potter film to use its disappointing box office as an excuse not to do 2D animation anymore.

The Last Action Hero could've been a serviceable summer blockbuster, but releasing it against Jurassic Park led it to become a box office flop.
Shame, as the film is a very clever pastiche on action movies.

Zoolander got slaughtered at the box office because it was released on 9/28/01 - suffice to say its advertisements didn't make it to air leading up to the release

The original Mamma Mia! was slaughtered by The Dark Knight, as both opened the same weekend.

Solo was released at a really crowded time. They should have held off for a slower week at the box office rather than try to compete with bigger movies.

The original Mamma Mia! was slaughtered by The Dark Knight, as both opened the same weekend. Though to Mamma Mia's credit it did do fantastic box office overseas, and became the highest grossing film in the UK of all time, only losing that title to Avatar two years later. 615 million on a 52 million dollar budget is certainly nothing to sneeze at.

Second on Solo. The Lone Ranger was up against Man of Steel, Iron Man 3, This is The End, The Purge, and The Wolverine released a few weeks later and was DOA with mixed reviews

Hocus Pocus was released in the summer because Disney wanted The Nightmare Before Christmas to be their focal Halloween release. It had to go up against Jurassic Park, and was relegated to a footnote, before developing a cult following years later.

The Iron Giant got screwed by opening the Same weekend as The Sixth Sense and hardly advertised it due to them believing that because Quest for Camelot flopped, this would to due to it being traditional animation

Another one for Solo. I still think it would've made a profit if it had came out in December like the three previous Star Wars movies.

Another victim of the Summer of 1989 movie season was License to Kill, It was originally going to be called "License Revoked" before it became clear that many people don't know what "Revoked" is, no wonder there hasn't been a Bond film released in the summer since. Star Trek Nemesis came out just before Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Yeah this was the first that came to mind. Second on Solo. The Lone Ranger was up against Man of Steel, Iron Man 3, This is The End, The Purge, and The Wolverine released a few weeks later and was DOA with mixed reviews I don't think the Lone Ranger had a chance of making it's money back regardless.

The hype behind it was that Disney was hoping that it was going to be the new Pirates of the Carribean, as least it seemed like it was marketed that way

Have films released on the weekends of either the First/Second Round or Sweet 16/Elite 8 of the NCAA tournament been screwed at the box office? What notable movies were released the same weekend as the aforementioned First/2nd round or Sweet 16/elite 8 rounds of the tournament?

What notable movies were released the same weekend as the aforementioned First/2nd round or Sweet 16/elite 8 rounds of the tournament? I honestly doubt that any movie has ever had any kind of financial impact thanks to the NCAA tournament. If anything, I'm more inclined to believe there are certain television shows that were put 'on hiatus' thanks to the tournament only to never return due to poor ratings.

Poor UHF got slaughtered by the ridiculously strong 1989 summer movie season which had the likes of Batman, the Last Crusade, Ghostbusters II, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and Lethal Weapon 2. According to Al on the commentary track, the film got the highest test audience score for an Orion pictures comedy in studio history so it was kind of a no brainer the executives would make it one of their summer tent-poles. They just picked the wrong summer. The film being slaughtered by most mainstream critics also didn't help matters much.
