A valid point, but "The Naked Gun" was still a movie starring movie stars. "UHF" was a movie starring a musician. And if you're making a movie starring a musician in the 1980s, you've got to make sure they're one with mainstream, crossover appeal. That's why "Purple Rain" and "Desperately Seeking Susan" were hits and "UHF" wasn't. Weird Al Yankovic was not in Prince or Madonna's league in terms of celebrity appeal during the '80s.
What about Under the Cherry Moon, Shanghai Surprise, Graffiti Bridge, and Who's That Girl? 😊

The original Mamma Mia! was slaughtered by The Dark Knight, as both opened the same weekend. I think the bigger answer to this question that nobody has brought up yet is Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Opened a week before TDK and it did pretty decently here in the United States its opening weekend but then dropped 70% it's second weekend because of TDK's release. Also most likely stopped a third GDT Hellboy movie from being made, which is a shame.

I'm pretty sure the Ed O'Neil starring vehicle Dutch came out the same weekend as Terminator 2 did.

Not only did Solo come out less than a month after Infinity War, but also 6 months after Last Jedi.
Come on, who needs THAT much Disney action film?

add many a film to the ET casualty list (Films that were released the Summer of ET): Week before ET: Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan (Was #1 at the box office the weekend before ET) Hanky panky Poltergeist Grease 2 (Out the day ET came out) Firefox (came out the week after ET) Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl Secret of Nimh Tron Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (actually beat ET at the box office for one weekend only for ET to recapture it the next week) Zapped! Things are Tough All Over Friday the 13th Part 3D (Actually beat ET at the box office but ET reclaimed #1 the Following Week) Fast Times at Ridgemount High The Beastmaster (Thank goodness for it's subsequent airings on HBO and later TBS) Pink Floyd's the Wall Inchon
Halloween 3:Season of the Witch came out the same weekend as First Blood

Inchon could've come out the same day as Xanadu or Heaven's Gate and that wouldn't help it

Not only did Solo come out less than a month after Infinity War, but also 6 months after Last Jedi. Come on, who needs THAT much Disney action film? When I first saw the release dates for the new round of "Star Wars" movies and spin-offs, I was concerned that we were going to reach a level of over-saturation. With the original trilogy and the prequels, they were released three years apart, so there was enough time for fans to see the movie, then get excited as rumors started swirling about the next movie, so by the time the trailers hit cinemas, people would be frothing at the mouth to be first in line. Compare that to the latest rollout of "Star Wars" films. We had "The Force Awakens" in December 2015. A year later, it was "Rogue One." A year after that, we saw "The Last Jedi." Five months later, and "Solo" was already in theaters. That's four movies over the course of 29 months. But I also think there were other factors that played into "Solo" being a disappointment, which couldn't have saved it regardless of its release date. It was a combination of the mess going on behind the scenes with directors leaving the project in the middle of filming, the disappointment in the underwhelming "The Last Jedi", and the lack of us needing a Han Solo origin story, in that I don't think fans were really clamoring to see people on screen in Han and Lando cosplay.

The Last Action Hero could've been a serviceable summer blockbuster, but releasing it against Jurassic Park led it to become a box office flop. Shame, as the film is a very clever pastiche on action movies. Agreed. I don't think it's the turkey that some people think it is. I think it has a few clever, funny moments and a pretty creative concept for a plot.

Last year I really thought Spider-Verse would hurt Aquaman at the BO.
Ummmmm. Not so much.

Last year I really thought Spider-Verse would hurt Aquaman at the BO. Ummmmm. Not so much. It was expected that Spider-Verse wouldn't do huge numbers at the Box Office, as December is not a particularly strong month for animated movies. It took $35 million opening weekend, which isn't a great debut on paper compared to its live action contemporaries, but is still the best December opening for an animated movie in history.

Also, it's helping just a TEENY bit that critical and fan reaction has touted this as one of the best animated films in recent memory and actually has a strong chance of stealing the Best Animated Feature Oscar from Incredibles 2, which...if you would have told me that before the movies came out, I'd have laughed silly.

While critical reaction to it was mixed at best, Once Upon a Forest was a harmless Hanna-Barbera produced animated movie that probably would've found enough of an audience to make a small profit had it not opened a week after Jurassic Park, which was still dominating the box office.

Lone Ranger was so disappointing I had to apologize to my wife for insisting we see it.
