news.avclub.com/marvel-subtly-retcons-loki-s-supervillain-role-1831460208TLDR - Marvel edited his bio on the website to say that the scepter Thanos gave him was brainwashing him and amplifying his hatred of Thor and humanity. This of course makes perfect sense with how he was already murderous in the first Thor movie and absolutely nothing in Avengers even slightly implies he's been controlled. Which of course raises the question then of why Thanos would even do this because there's really no reason whatsoever for him to care about anything Loki did besides getting results and if anything trying to amplify his violence would actively fly in the face of his self-perceived altruistic goals, but they hadn't come up with Thanos's goals yet and are trying for a sloppy handwave so don't question it I guess.

I'm actually surprised WWE never tried an excuse like this.

The Joker was a good guy all along.
Jason Todd beat HIMSELF to death with a crowbar and framed Joker.

I'll be perfectly honest, this doesn't stray too far from how I've always seen Loki in the MCU.
The way I read Thor 1 was that Loki didn't hate Thor or really have any personal problems with him. He considered him his brother and loved him. He just thought Thor was incompetent and would lead Asgard to ruin if put in charge. His defeat at the end of Thor 1 drove him a little crazy and led him to make a rash decision to ally with Thanos in Avengers 1. After his defeat in Avengers 1, his long imprisonment on Asgard and his mothers death, he realizes in Thor 2 that he went way too far and tries to make amends to some degree while at the same time keeping his goal of wanting to rule Asgard, simply because he thinks he'd be the best person to do it. Then Thor 3 and Infinity War wraps up his character.
Throughout the movies he goes out of his way to avoid killing any Asgardians. He was more then content with exiling Thor, Odin and Heimdall (and apparently Sif) even though he had the opportunities to kill them and he knew they could potentially screw up his plans.
I don't particularly like the idea that he was being brain-washed the whole time, but I do think he got into a situation that got out of control of him way too quickly and he didn't know how to deal with it.

To be fair, the Norse god version wasn't strictly 'evil'. He was a trickster character. Their allegiances are fluid as hell. So this fits.

I always thought Loki was probably closest to chaotic neutral on the spectrum as opposed to being really evil or good. I'm kinda "eh" either way i guess.

He did order the Destroyer to kill Thor, Sif, and the Warriors Three when he realised they'd all met up on Earth, though.

I guess Thanos' motive in this was knowing that Asgard had the Space Gem (aka, the Tesseract) but it would've been all but impossible for him to get to it, so he used Loki as a pawn to get easier access to it.
I mean, it's a silly retcon from a narrative standpoint. But you can make it fit, at least.

And the random kid in Iron Man 2 was totally Peter Parker all along.
We planned it that way the beginning! No foolin!

Honestly, I see him in Thor 1 as more of a "incredibly misguided" villain than an outright evil one, with a bad emotional state due to finding out his heritage and inadvertently causing the Odinsleep. Then Avengers 1 after his father and brother went against him like that he realised he was being the villain, but considers himself too far gone. The rest of his appearances are him slowly coming back to the side of good.

It's not like the Highlander 2 "they were aliens all along" asspull. The reason for this retcon appears to be because the upcoming Loki TV series will be Loki in Hel, recapping his life, so it makes sense to cast him in a more positive light. He was always a trickster who just happened to have a couple of years where he went a bit nuts.

He did order the Destroyer to kill Thor, Sif, and the Warriors Three when he realised they'd all met up on Earth, though. Yeah, but by then his plans were falling apart and he was getting desperate. If his plan had worked then the only person that would've died was Laufey, who was also a villain with no qualms against committing genocide.

This is only so they'll be able to make that Loki show and have him be a full good guy... Which is dumb because no one cared about the character until The Avengers where he was full evil. After that, he settled into a great fit of being ultimately bad, but doing what best serves him at the moment. So, he'll team with his brother, but we know at any moment, he'll betray him. It's okay for villains to be villains, and it's okay for villains to have depth and nuance. Retconning to have him be brainwashed makes no sense, and completely undercuts a lot of natural development the character has gone through since.
