Not things you necessarily liked, but things that seemed so popular and/ profitable you don’t see how anyone could cancel them.
I’m mostly thinking of TV shows, but you could apply this to movies, music, comic books, whatever.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine has to be the top one for me in recent memories. Usually when a show gets cancelled it either just dies or gets picked up my a lesser channel. Brooklyn Nine-Nine actually moves to a better channel which shows just how bad Fox’s judgement was.
Also, I never watched it and from what I can tell it was less popular than I thought it was, but The OC getting cancelled surprised me.

Make a lot more money off in house shows then you do off someone else producing it. Pretty much everyone is trying to bring everything in house now, other then Fox because they just sold their studios. And yeah, I’ve definitely noticed NBC has been pimping the hell out of B99 lately. Even my mum mentioned to me that it’s back soon and she doesn’t even watch it |

Smackdown on the CW was their highest rated show as I could remember. And then Dawn Ostroff got rid of that to go for a demographic they could never get(young white women).

The monetary value of some shows is their syndication/streaming potential and not ad revenue. Brooklyn 99's ratings were not producing the ad revenue that FOX deemed enough profit to continue to pay the licensing fee to NBC. There is still syndication/streaming value in B99 so producing more episodes is a good idea for NBC, but not for FOX because they don't get any money from syndication/streaming. If they were continue, they would be paying NBC the rights to make that studio more money.

Dawn Ostroff was the worst. This is the woman who convinced Rob Thomas that the viewers got "confused" at following one season-long mystery arc in Veronica Mars, and to change the structure of the show to three separate mysteries. Though to be fair on the demo point... Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries, ANTM... those shows (and some others) did garner a young woman demo. As to their race, I can't comment, but I'd say overall the channel managed to carve out a spot in that audience. |

When renewal time comes up, we're definitely giving you a sixth season. Whedon: Thank you, that's great. Since you've already decided on that, can you possibly renew it now? It'll give some job security to the production staff who won't have to wait until the last minute to commit to us and potentially miss out on other jobs. TV Exec: Who in the hell do you think you are? That's it, you're cancelled! |

NBC execs made such a needless mess of that.
Fox in the early 00's made a habit of cancelling quality TV shows in favor of some of the worst TV shows known to man.

Unfortunately by then Whedon had begun preproduction on Serenity, and David Boreanaz had accepted a role in the fourth Crow movie and would be cast in Bones not long after that, so any attempts by WB to undo the cancellation were rendered pointless. |

then ABC president Tony Thomopoulos said Police Squad! was cancelled because "the viewer had to watch it in order to appreciate it."
Obviously the statement was about paying close attention to get the jokes but he could have worded it better

This is a great post with both examples 100% accurate. As for the Conan thing, Howard Stern of all people predicted this 100% accurately before Jay Leno’s first prime time episode. I don’t listen to Stern much anymore, but knowing him I’m sure he still crows about it. Anyway, Stern said Conan should have been happy in the spot he was in and stayed there since he was doing great. He said that Leno would bomb and want to go back to the Tonight show, Fallon would be okay, and Conan would take the bullet. This is exactly what happened. |

It was getting good reviews and respectable viewing figures, yet Channel 4 axed it after two series. A few months later it won the Rose d’Or for Best Sitcom. They tried a kickstarter to make more episodes but it didn’t meet the target.

Most Danish dramas are axed after three seasons regardless of how good they are. It's done to allow other writers and producers the chance to showcase their work.
