So, All Elite Wrestling's Double or Nothing show is set, tickets are sold and the card is shaping up. But I want to ask about the most important part of any sporting event, the commentary. Commentary, especially wrestling commentary where there is so much that can/should be covered to get across what the story needs, is a central factor that can make or break both moments and shows. Jim Ross in his prime was able to sell every part of the wrestling show as being worth investing in, and in New Japan Kevin Kelly seems more invested in the success and failure of the wrestlers than should probably be healthy for a man that afraid of most of them.
So, what does FAN want from AEW commentary? I mean AEW has Chuck Taylor under contract and Excalibur called the pool party ticket rally, so would the best of PWG commentary sate you (in the way that I would be totally on board with) or do you have something else you'd want on comms.

Genuine natural emotion and not overproduced yelling at their ear commentary.
I’m talking Lance Russell getting angry when someone cheated or prime Jim Ross losing his objectivity by yelling that “they killed Mick Foley”.

I don’t want an hour of Chuck Taylor and Excalibur telling inside jokes to amuse themselves, I want someone who takes what’s happening in the ring as serious.

I don’t want an hour of Chuck Taylor and Excalibur telling inside jokes to amuse themselves, I want someone who takes what’s happening in the ring as serious. First of all, big fan of the "oh, let me fully read the op post" (No negativity intended, I'm serious) Second: I get that, I feel like Excalibur can do a good job of being a straight forward play-by-play guy and I consider Chuck Taylor to be probably my favorite color guy of all time, but the PWG jokey attitude isn't right for a serious in-ring product, I definitely can agree with that.

I wouldn't be able to stand Excalibur calling it like he was at a weekly Dragon Ball FighterZ tournament Wednesday Night Fights in SoCal. Which is what he'd do.

Don West selling everything as if his life depended on it would be great on color

If I’m them, I’d use one known name for colour and one unknown guy for PBP. Use an unknown or relative unknown, who can develop that identity of the “AEW Commentator”. Let him grow with the company, so he forms that genuine connection with the audience. Kinda like how Joey Styles did in ECW.
For colour, get somebody with name value who wrestling fans will recognize when they’re flipping channels but the most important thing is chemistry with the PBP guy. Build around the PBP guy
That’s how I’d do things were I in charge.

I don’t remember Excalibur ever being serious while announcing. I don’t think he can even try at being serious. In the middle of a match he made a joke about Sami Zayn wearing big boy pants, then when Mount Rushmore was wrecking shit up and taking out everybody, Excalibur only got upset because they made fun of recycling and then called Adam Cole fat. I get that’s the humor in PWG, but unfortunately I don’t think Excalibur’s commentary would appeal to the masses.

I want anything but announcers trying their hardest to sound cool and self aware of how wacky wrestling is and how they're just *so* amused by everything. Please god f***ing anything but that.

I want a consistent team of 1 pbp and one colour. I want a sound that defines the product. You hear them and that means AEW.

Ok if he did a good job then I take it back, he could be a good commentator for AEW.

As long as it's not f***ing Mauro god damn Ranallo, then I'll be at least ok with it.
I know Ranallo is in WWE and all that, but I hate his shitty commentary so much that it has actually lowered my expectations of what commentary should be to "not Ranallo = Passable".

Competence. I want play by play to do it completely straight and treat it like a real sport even if he comes off as a geek. Colour guy to be insightful, but not overbearing. Capable of liking heels or faces. Not asking much but like a prime Ventura or Heenan 😊

Out of curiosity is Joey styles still in the business?
Also did Schiavonne do a decent job for MLW?

Don't tell the announcers the finishes beforehand so they have natural reactions like boxing/MMA
