He did a couple of New Japan shows and was pretty serious there. Excalibur did? Ok if he did a good job then I take it back, he could be a good commentator for AEW. He also did All In, and while he would drop a few one liners and references here and there, he did play it mostly straight.

If he can keep doing those performances then he can be their Joey Styles/Jim Ross. Not sure how they will explain the mask though.

I’d like to see Conrad Thompson on commentary.

Sell what's important. Let a moment breathe. Explain the stipulations or rules from time to time, directly or indirectly. Do not undermine the talent. (A heel or face questioning the other's motives, etc, is fine. Acting amused at something like Bray Wyatt and trying to act too good for your own show is dreadful.) Promote what is happening later in the night, but don't ignore the in-ring action entirely.
Most wrestling companies have got a few of these right, like Don West used to sell everything, which got to be too damn much, and WWE often let a moment breathe, but don't really explain the rules for shit and undermine the talent a lot, etc etc.
Bring it all together and give us solid commentary, please. Doesn't even have to be amazing, it just needs to get the job done.
(Honestly, I'd love if Ambrose came over to do commentary and the occasional match, Lawler style. He's really good on commentary. Barring him, wouldn't mind Colt doing much the same.)

Id also suggest some of the earlier(2010-2011) episodes of Championship Wrestling from Hollywood, if you can find them. He was part of the commentary team in that era, and it was a PG show played completely straight. Dude knows his audience.

I can vouch for serious Excalibur. The man can be straight up amazing. He's great on his feet with botches and explaining the reasons for moves kinda like a Regal-lite.

Sell what's important. Let a moment breathe. These. It's my favourite part of Lucha Underground. Vamp and Striker can be annoying af but they can sell the moments better than anyone.

Oddly enough, this (to me atleast) is one of the MAJOR things AEW needs to get right in order to provide an alternative. If everything they say is true, that wins and losses matter, all the statistics,a more sports oritented feel.. they need atleast one guy who is the analytical type, think Mike Tenay. One guy who has a great sounding voice, much like Schiavone in WCW. Now obviously they cant go reach out for both of them, but only because fans would try and murder them for being WCW/TNA 2.0. I mean, listen to the commentary on UFC fights. It's engaging, and it feels like it matters. They are analyzing whats going on, and selling the product.

To add on to my previous post, here's Cabana's first NWA title win, called by Excalibur and Todd Kenneley. He can be totally serious when he needs to. Just with PWG, he, well, DOESN'T need to be serious.

I think that given how inescapable a show's commentary is, it being bad can sour it a lot. Bad commentary has been one of the major problems of WWE for years and years now, for instance.

There needs to be a real adversarial relationship, where one announcer is clearly a face and one clearly a heel, a la Heenan and Monsoon. Having announcers bicker with someone trying to justify the heels at every turn is way more entertaining than having all face announcers agreeing on how dastardly the bad guy is.
No scripting here. Commentary in particular needs to feel real and natural, not canned and rehearsed.

Whoever is on play-by-play, call the moves. That's all I want from most wrestling commentary these days.

As a wrestling promotion, they certainly should have someone who provides a degree of bias, who can help fans figure out who faces/heels are, but honestly, the days of a King/Ross seem dated. Once again, reference UFC (who have this formula totally figured out). The announcers just call it down the middle, along with some conversation in between. The fighters character determines who is good/bad. To me, that's how it should be. They've already said that they want fans to like who they like. Having an announcer really enforce who is good or bad, just kind of exposes the fact that it's staged in my opinion. The commentary team should analyze what is happening, and how they feel about it. Nothing more. If they go on tyrades, or if the color guy really backs up the heel, it will totally miss the mark of a sporting contest. Just my opinion.

Who called the NWA Title match at All In? He wasn't bad. Him and Excalibur could be a good team.
I really just want two people that know their stuff (history, moves, and the like) and want to be there. I hate to get negative with this but listen to JR's calls on the last two or so NJPW live specials, that is exactly what I don't want.

It's already been stated that Tony Khan chose Alex Marvez to be their play by play man. They've known each other for decades. Marvez certainly knows his stuff, but he hasn't been working in wrestling. I'm not sure he has any sort of wrestling commentary experience at all, but he's been a fan his whole life, and was a sheet writer in the early 90s. He's been working in "real" sports since then. Time will tell how he takes to wrestling commentary.

A new voice is nice to hear, though obviously, I hope he can find some chemistry with whoever is calling it with him.

Out of curiosity is Joey styles still in the business? Also did Schiavonne do a decent job for MLW? Tony did a good job in MLW (I thought he still there.) Joey Styles went MIA since that accident several years back. To answer the question. I just want the action to be called like a sport but have a voice that not so annoying (see Josh Mathews). I also don't need someone repeat and Narrate promos as they happen. See Mike Tenay in TNA. The guy legit would do that. I'm like shut the hell up Mike and let the wrestlers tell the story. I don't need you telling me there story.
