Why have they never done a crossover movie between Star Trek and Star Wars? Two of the biggest science fiction franchises of all time meeting feels like it would be a no-brainer. Said movie would probably break box office records.
If nothing else, it'd be worth it just for the reaction from both fandoms.

For one thing they are now owned by rivaling studios.
Second, I can't think of a single person who would be brave enough to write/direct something like this. No matter how good, they would get crucified to by the hardcore base.

They're two different genres, for one thing. It wouldn't work.

What would a story like this even look like?

I don't think Star Wars has done any kind of official crossover with another property in any medium. Not the cartoons, the comics, or the novels. Financially, it probably hasn't been in their interest to do so. That said, it wouldn't surprise me to see a Star Wars/Marvel Universe comic book event at some point, now that both are owned by Disney.

Even getting past the logistical issues, I don't see what's in it for Star Wars. Star Trek's big but it's nowhere near as big, and for the most part the overlap between the two's fanbases is so great they probably wouldn't see any real increase in business from it.

SFDebris wrote a great crossover fic a few years ago called the Unity Saga , which more than does the concept justice.

The two aren't compatible, though if Star Trek Online is anything to go by, Tom Paris is a big Star Wars fan.

a space opera fantasy and a mostly realistic science fiction adventure show don't really fit in teh same universe...
Unless you try to force teh space wizards have a scientific explanation... but no one would be dumb enough to try that >_>

Star Trek takes place in our future while Star War takes place "a long time ago" (in a galaxy far, far away). Plot would need time travel.

Back when I was primarily a Star Wars fan I use to shit on Star Trek and it's fandom. "yeah, my thing is better bitch!".
But then I actually watched some star trek...why are these two even compared? As it's already been pointed out they are nothing alike except they take place in outer space and have "Star" in the title.

Star Trek takes place about 300 years in our future. Star Wars takes place a long time ago ( in the past) in a galaxy far, far away ( not the Milky Way). Also Klingons < Jedis!

Not yet, anyway; I fully expect it to happen eventually. The closest they've come to it are things like the old Muppets episode and a very few non-story advertising type deals.

When I was a young kid I thought the Ewoks were their own thing since they had movies and a cartoon show. I thought their appearance in ROTJ was a crossover.

They made Star Wars Transforemers.
There's currently a Star Trek/Transformers comic book crossover.
Does this mean it could happen?
God I hope not. I like both but a crossover would suck. If you really want one I'm sure someone out there has written fan fiction of it.

Aliens from ET species were present in the Senate Hall in Phantom Menace, and in ET on Halloween when they walked past a kid in Yoda mask, ET said "Home". I believe its confirmed that ET is supposed to be from Star Wars universe though. 2. I heard they had a crossover comic in 90s where Han Solo met Indiana Jones (both Harrison Ford characters).
