Because God forbid a single Mania feud be to the point this year.
I really don't actually see how they're going to manage to rush this to a conclusion in the span of the next show or two when they're going to need the Mania match announced by. So Vince hates Kofi because... reasons, and now you just have to assume Kofi's going to shrug off him and his friends being savagely beaten down to focus on getting the belt instead. And also apparently Vince loathes Kofi but is perfectly fine with putting Mustafa Ali in the position to win the belt even though the only notable difference between them is that Ali didn't earn it.

They can't help themselves. They have to book wild storyline nonsense every single week.
They think it'll help boost ratings, but simple stories that people can get behind will do that far more effectively.

Why on earth did they feel the need to complicate this? They didn't even need to have Bryan wrestle on this PPV (if you'll notice, the Universal Champion isn't required to appear on every glorified In Your House), so they didn't need a 'holding pattern' match at all.
After Kofi's showing, they should have just had him come out and challenge Bryan to a match, or have him win a match to be the number one contender. Then the crowd are fully behind him and, crucially, not confused over all the twists and turns in a storyline that really should be (like Becky vs Ronda) utterly straightforward.

This year's WM build is especially shitty.

I'm pretty sure that Ali's going to end up turning heel. The fact Ali got the shot indirectly points him as Vince's "man" and given Kofi took his spot, yeah, I can see how it's going. At times the announcers were pushing the narrative that Ali took Kofi's position and it was weird. Either way yeah, Ali got the crowd behind him but this storyline, the crowd wants Kofi and we'll get Kofi. I'm just thinking that there has to be a reason why Ali was in this spot. if it's just because he wasn't in the EC match? It would be good but we'll see.
Besides that I've noticed that these days it's been more about how guys will get a WM match rather than if they'll win the match. They're basically telling us that "hey if this guy enters the match he's winning" rather than saying "hey this guy might win in that match."
They just need to put him in the match and then we'll see where it goes.

(if you'll notice, the Universal Champion isn't required to appear on every glorified In Your House) True, but the 30 day must-defend-or-we'll-strip-you-of-the-title clause is still effective for every champion in the company not named 'Brock Lesnar'.

I mean Kofi got built up for a title match in 2 weeks. Since this will be a mid card match at mania they can do the same thing again.

I have to say, troll Vince was at least in rare form here. Telling Kofi Kingston that he was making the WWE title match a Triple Threat, and that Kofi's match was next, but leaving out the fact that those two facts had nothing to do with each other was pretty clever.

WWE doing literally anything lately that seems butt-easy on paper:

Since Vince involvement usually ends with him getting comeuppance, how does it happen here? Can he still take a bump?

Also if New Day was going to interfere anyway why did they wait until Kofi was dead to do it?

Having him lose tonight was just weird and stupid, lol. They could have had Kofi get a flash roll-up, and then do the post-match shit afterwards. Accomplishes the same thing and the guy who is supposedly being built for a WWE title match doesn't take a meaningless L.

I just think the crux of the issues is I believe that promised Owens the title match at Mania and they don't want to go back on their word so now they are trying to book this on fly and not piss off Kevin.

I mean Vince did take a punch from AJ, even though f*** all came of that. Kofi could at least do that.

They're not doing the Vince stuff bad as it stands, but I just don't care for Vince stuff in this angle at all. The current Mania build feels veryvery much like 1999 to me where there was just waaaay too much going on in angles that could have been super super simple and didn't need all the excess shit.

"We gotta throw a McMahon in there to make it hot" is the new "lets throw Drake on this feature." The McMahon Stimulus Package is the go-to thing they do these days lmao. It's silly.

Fastlane comes at an odd time and this whole story is a last minute deal. I'm willing to cut some slack tonight and see where SDL takes us from here on out.

Kofi is absolutely killing it on his own and they're just throwing a McMahon sized boulder at him and screaming at him to make sure he's still visible under it.
