WWE Trying To Ban Indie Events From WrestleMania 36 Week"“I can tell you from someone I know very well in the Tampa area who’s already well-immersed on some of the things that are going down there for WrestleMania 36 in 2020. The WWE is already on the move to block WrestleCon and independent wrestling events from running major buildings that are state-owned and that are major chains that they’ve got agreements to keep WWE exclusive this weekend.” - Mike Johnson Someone should contact the Department of Small Business about this! This is America, people should be allowed to make money. [Too political?] In all fairness, I can hear this "WWE put a lot of work into Wrestlemania, they shouldn't have to share that work with others." Which I strongly disagree with. They not only want to control buildings, but cities. It's just not right. I know McMahon has spent decades ruining people who compete with him, but it doesn't make it right. Just allow competition and be the best.

Not to get too political, but who's going to stop them? Anti-trust laws are federal, and umm, yeah. Someone could make a Sherman Act case, I guess, but good luck with the FTC.

Bad move. Even if it’s allowed the indies and almost certainly AEW will hold an independent wrestling fest in some nearby area. The WWE doesn’t have a lot of goodwill at the moment and all that is missing is a tipping point where they start to slide downwards,

They try every few years to f*** with the indies running that week. Not something new so much as the cycle starting all the f*** over again. As if over 50,000 tourists in town for the occasion are all going to spend their money only on WWE and that stuff like Axxess and Takeover won't sell out anyway. It's crap, and a big part of why I still have issues believing that certain moves WWE's made in regards to lining up friendly indies comes with any real desire to enrich the independent scene in any meaningful way.

I'm taking this with a grain of salt until I hear indie promoters or podcast/live-show guys say they've been squeezed out of booking venues. This rumor kicks up every now and then for Mania weekend and nothing ever seems to come of it.

Why do this? These indie events don’t cut into their business, at all. Every event WWE puts on, during Mania week, sell out. If anything, things like WrestleCon, just provide extra incentive for people to make the Mania week trip if true, this is utterly silly.

You know what? It's a dick move, but I do not blame them. I think that they are tired of all of the indy guys piggybacking on them to make money. If there is even one dollar to be had off of the back of WrestleMania in that area, Vince McMahon wants it. Each and every last one.
I think Vince's logic is that if fans do not buy tickets to whatever indie show is there, they will have more money for tickets to their other events and to buy merchandise. Again, a greedy dick move, but I get it.

How can WWE ban other companies from using publically owned buildings?

To stop their competition from growing.

The other events can either conflict with their shows timing-wise (HOF and the MSG show) or they can lead to people using up their disposable income on those events and not spending it on something like Smackdown.

Maybe, but I think the problem with the HoF is the event itself. A problem that, if you believe reports, WWE realizes is there and are trying to fix. It’s too damn long and filled with neverending speeches. I think Hillbilly Jim’s is still going. We’re just going to disagree on this. Ultimately, I doubt any of these events affect WWE’s bottom line, either way.

If WWE can't sell out a Smackdown in their home base then that's an issue with Smackdown, not with other indie shows happening in the area. The majority of the indie shows going on are in small venues that don't have the capacity to be any real threat to that bottom line, but between the tens of thousands of people flying in and the local fans, any WWE show not selling out is doing so because of downturns in product interest, not Wrestlecon. There's no excuse for the Barclay's Center not being sold out that doesn't come 101% from within.
