I agree with you, but there were occasions where I don't think they really knew what they were building to. Some weeks, it seemed like the plan was to turn Trish heel on Mickie. Which I think could have worked, but psycho lesbian Mickie was much more entertaining. Trish turning heel on Mickie would have made absolutely no sense. I’m glad it went the way it did. I just wish they never made Mickie James “normal”

I just wish they never made Mickie James “normal” It could have worked, if Trish had just been outright horrible to Mickie, but Mickie was too blinded by love/hero worship to realize she was being treated like shit. Granted, I'm glad they did it the way they did. And I agree about them changing Mickie's character. Even as a face, she should have kept the craziness that she had as a heel. She just keeps it toned down until she really gets pushed over the edge. Like in the Melina and Beth feuds, it would have been great if after losing constantly, she snapped and reverted to the mind-games she played with Trish.

The original Shield run Austin vs McMahon (97-Fully Loaded 99) I know the Higher Power reveal is looked down upon as being awful, but I kinda liked it and they managed to keep things hot with that period of Austin being WWF CEO so that the feud kept going.

To give an idea of how much they packed into the weekly shows at the time, Vince being revealed as the Higher Power and Austin being named CEO was the same segment.

Bret Harts November 96 to November 97. The way his character slowly became more frustrated and whiney, until he finally snapped was great. Also Austin, HBK, Sid, Mankind and Undertaker were all basically tweeners all with different motivations, the "Shades of Grey" was done perfectly during that year.

Yeah, it's weird how Vince being revealed as the higher power is regarded as this huge "heel reigns triumphantly, pulling the wool over everyone's eyes" moment mostly due to Vince's on-point delivery and Jim Ross's accompanying surprise, but history has forgotten that Vince was immediately humiliated and outsmarted, with Linda having resigned from her CEO position and naming Austin as her replacement.

Tomasso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano. I came to say this but I wasn't sure if it counted since it was on NXT. By some of the reactions from others here it does not seem to count. It's sad that it was derailed by 3 different injuries, two to Ciampa and one to Black, but the story telling in this feud over nearly TWO YEARS was tremendous. Also agree with the HBK v Jericho saga in 2008. The WWE main roster hasn't come close to anything this good until Kofi Mania this year. Major props to the Trish v Mickie feud as well. The Yes Movement storyline FINALLY had a satisfactory pay off but getting there was maddening at the time. Orton cashing in at SS, The inclusion of Big Show for no reason whatsoever, which gave us THAT match at Survivor Series 2013, the introduction of the word, abeyance, into the vocabulary of wrestling fans, HBK screwing Bryan out of the title and HBK having to convince Vince that Bryan needed to at least get SOME comeuppance on him the next night on Raw, Daniel Wyatt dressed as a Midas employee for a couple weeks, Royal Rumble 2014, Bootista. Sorry about the tangent I was going to put this storyline as a good one but then all those memories came flooding back and I remembered what a disaster the whole thing was minus the payoff.

You could even stretch that out to at least the end of 1999, with his family seeing he's gone too far, Stephanie first tries to help his enemy Steve Austin, then when they doesn't work she turns to the dark side and secretly plots with HHH to hurt her dad as much as she can before revealing she was in on it, just as he'd done to her.

People seem to forget that Austin knew who it was beforehand. They did a Ministry beatdown on Austin where Vince revealed his face to Austin (with Vinces back to the camera) on the previous night's Heat So Linda and the family were able to get the jump on Vince
