We move into 1999 with the Second of Four lists. Vote for your favorite movie from this part of this year, and, as always, explain your choice (if you like), as well as mention any other movies you might have seen on this list, below.

We will also accept Write in Votes (although, please mention it as such) for movies not included on the list I'm getting the choices off of. However, I will not remove any from the list (I can't by that point), so, if you want to make your case why a certain movie isn't a horror film, make it. Hell, you might end up swaying a few voters from going in that direction, but I can't/won't remove it from the list or DQ it.

I've seen two of the movies on this poll. Stigmata f***in' sucks. Lake Placid doesn't. My vote goes to Lake Placid.

It was between that and Deep Blue Sea. Crocodiles have been used less than sharks in these kind of movies so Lake Placid got my vote.

WILD ZERO is an over-the-top horror comedy from Japan, in which a young man and his girlfriend try to survive a zombie apocalypse with the help of Guitar Wolf, the most badass rock band in the entire universe.

Two hours left for this one, and Lake Placid is crushing it. Second place was The Blair Witch Project, but it has a ways to go to catch up. It's not impossible, though.

Lake Placid was anything but, as it ended up kicking the asses of some BIG movies to win and go on. I've only seen parts of this movie, but it has gained a bit of a cult following over the years. I wound up voting (by a hair) for the original Blair Witch Product. Yes, it spawned a million shaky cam imitators (although, it was somewhat influenced by 98's The Last Broadcast), and, no, despite the hustle, I wouldn't put it on that level of being a GREAT horror film. But it is good, and pretty effective the first few times I watched it. I haven't really watched it since, as I kind of wonder whether or not it would work for me now, as I have seen a LOT of shaky cam found footage movies since then. Plus, once again, I do respect the hustle of these filmmakers. They made a movie for peanuts, and built it up to the point where it made millions (with help from the studio that bought and distributed it, of course). Curse of the Blair Witch was a televised part of that brilliant ad campaign that convinced many viewers that the BWP movie was, in fact, based off of real events in any kind of way.

As this was a part of the year with no true GREAT horror films, we're left with Good to Bleugh. I was close to voting for The Astronaut's Wife, as it is a very stylishly shot alien take on Rosemary's Baby. Almost like the serious (yet artsy) version of the main storyline of Species II in many ways as well, with Johnny Depp playing an astronaut that comes back from a space mission (or does he?) either taken over by (or full) alien life. It's pretty decent.


Stigmata and Deep Blue Sea were OK for what they were, but nothing more. It is funny to me that LL Cool J is in this playing much the same character he played in H2O a year earlier, except this time as a chef rather than a security guard. Ah, Hollywood. The soundtrack from Stigmata was actually more worth checking out than the movie.

Stir of Echos was SO close to being a Really Good horror film, but there are some pretty huge plot (and even scene) discrepancies that end up overcoming the positives in this film. I won't go into too much detail, but I'll say it involves the wife character to Kevin Bacon's ghost haunted lead.

Speaking of let downs involving hauntings, let's finish off with the remake of The Haunting. It's too bad, as the film actually has a really solid cast, but I think the director was more interested in making a BIG BUDGET special effects film than a horror film. We'll see a similar remake in the next list, but this filmmaker was able to turn that to their advantage, and make a couple franchises out of it.

Speaking of which, let's get to List 3 of 1999.

I would have voted for Blair Witch. Love Lake Placid,but Blair Witch was the scarier film to me. Saw it in an almost empty theater not long after it came out. And wow. It is a film that loses something when you see it at home on your tv.
