Meaning coming in from other areas.
Arn & Tully immediately come to mind. The only change was they were given the name "The Brain Busters" which I thought was an awesome name. I'm glad Vince didn't try to pull some Red Rooster type crap with them.
Who are some others that he didn't change(much?

Other than the ref stint, Ron Garvin's work while under Vince was fairly gimmick free all things considered.
Honestly its hard to believe he was in both WWE and the NWA in 80s, and its the latter that had him dressing in drag for angles.

Ultimate Warrior.
Fact that Warrior retained all rights to the character in court proves Vince McMahon had little to no input on it.

Hearing he wanted Backlund to do some punk rock gimmick. Also, one time New Jack said he and Mustafa were approached to wrestle as a tag team known under the name Original Recipes, though he may have been joking.

Punk Rock Backlund would have been worth seeing.

Chris Jericho.
It was the same character from WCW given the main event stage initially, with minor tweaks such as nickname and finishing move name.
Everything beyond that was Jericho evolving himself and the character.

Guys like JYD came in at a time when McMahon wasn't yet pushing his own gimmick ideas on people. A few here or there, but most guys up through between WM2 and WM3 kept whatever gimmick they already had. Around '87 is when things really started changing in that regard.

Big Show? He didn't really need much of a gimmick.

Benoit.
When Dean Malenko was doing a James Bond gimmick and Perry Saturn was in love with a mop, Benoit was always treated serious.

One Man Gang, pre-Akeem. The Rockers weren't too different from the Midnight Rockers.

Steve Blackman's "character" was pretty untouched when he arrived in the WWE... martial arts ass-kicker.

Kerry Von Erich. Though he was given the Texas Tornado nickname, they still referred to him as Kerry Von Erich several times, and the only change was that he used the discus punch as a finisher instead of the claw.

The Claw was his setup for the Discus Punch. I’ll go with Foley. From Mason the Mutilator in chainmail to Mankind. Foley got all Vince’s stuff out and all his in while still keeping Vince’s idea.
