We move deeper into 2005 with the Second of Six lists. Vote for your favorite movie from this part of this year, and, as always, explain your choice (if you like), as well as mention any other movies you might have seen on this list, below.

We will also accept Write in Votes (although, please mention it as such) for movies not included on the list I'm getting the choices off of. However, I will not remove any from the list (I can't by that point), so, if you want to make your case why a certain movie isn't a horror film, make it. Hell, you might end up swaying a few voters from going in that direction, but I can't/won't remove it from the list or DQ it.

Yeah well I expect Hostel might win here, personally I don't like it as not a fan of the torture porn style of horror.

I know a lot of folks hate it, but I really enjoyed CRY_WOLF. So I gave it my vote. THE BATMAN VS. DRACULA is alright if you liked that particular bat-series, and HELLRAISER: HELLWORLD is sorta fun because young Henry Cavill (MAN OF STEEL) and Khary Payton (voice of Cyborg on the Teen Titans animated series) are on the prowl for gothy-techno-type chicks.

The Fog-The second worst remake of this era. I have never been able to finish this turd of a film. Ever noticed how about a year after this hit dvd every used media store/pawn shop was loaded with copies of The Fog remake.

Feast-So damn fun. Great dvd release with lots of fun extras. Worth buying.

Doll Graveyard-Hmmmm mid 2000s Full Moon....is never really that great. This is one of the worst films from them in that era.

Hostel-Fun gore film. Sure it goes pretty far,that was the point of this film. I get that it isnt for everyone. But for me the sequel is the better film.

Venom-Never heard of this Miramax/Dimension NOLA set horror. A bunch of voodoo snakes escape and poss a guy. Group of college age kids get trapped at old houses on the bayou being chased. Really fun. And I first saw it off a Echo Bridge 8 horror films for $5 packs. It got my vote.

Hellraiser Hellworld-Yes every Hellraiser film from 5 to 8 or so was just a script that was already written with some Hellraiser stuff inserted. This one is a cheesy killer computer game film with Saw like traps and very little Hellraiser.

Beast of Bray Road-I love werewolf films.Heard this low budget werewolf film from The Asylum was decent. Caught it late one night on CHiller and it is a good way to pass 2 hours.

Two hours left, and Hostel and Batman vs.Dracula are currently tied.

Batman Vs. Dracula ends up sneaking it out over Hostel to win it for this poll. I've only see that one twice, and the biggest thing I remembered about it was The Batman's rather interesting looking (Rasta) Joker being turned into a vampire. It was decent though.


As for Hostel, it's too bad that it's kind of grouped in with the whole "Torture Porn" (I friggin' HATE that term, BTW....Torture Horror is fine, but to label something like that as being Porn (not that there's anything wrong with porn) makes it sound like it's something that should not exist/be kept from people being able to see it, and I have a problem with that....sorry) sub genre, as it's really quite the clever film that doesn't really get down to the torture until the halfway point of the film. Until then, it's almost like one could be watching Eurotrip or one of the R rated young adult comedies that were popular in this era. You're fooled as much as the three friends that get seduced and drawn into what eventually be revealed as kind of torture/kill for money business, with them on the bad end of that whole deal. Slowly but surely, however, the good times end, and the real horror is revealed. Director Eli Roth actually makes a perfectly balanced mix between GRUESOME horror and comedy here. Unfortunately, he would kind of lose this mixture on later movies like The Green Inferno, but I'll get to that when we talk about that movie.


Feast was a lot of fun, and very pleasing for me, as I had basically seen the making of this one (at least in reality TV form) on Project: Greenlight. The end result is a great over the top horror comedy about a group of cliches' (or are they?) being trapped in a bar by a group of creatures that plan to either kill you and eat you, or f*** you to death with their giant monster wangs....then eat you. There's a lot of great little performances here, in between all the gory deaths. Definitely worth checking out.


After that, whew, things start getting shitty. I saw most of Santa's Slay. It was pretty fun, with Goldberg as a murderous Santa Claus definitely has its moments, particularly the first scene of the movie. I would say it's worth checking out, but nothing worth going out of one's way to check out. Doom was a Meh adaptation of the game, and starred The Rock and Karl Urban, both of whom do their level best with the bad script and so so CGI effects. It's OK.


Also just OK is House of the Dead 2, which while not being as terrible as the first movie, also isn't as memorable because it wasn't as terrible as the first. At least being jaw droppingly bad is kind of memorable; this was non memorably OK. Zombie Honeymoon was a low budget affair about a just married man who is bitten, and slowly transforms into a zombie. His wife must strain the limits of how much she loves him, by sticking with him as he's turning into said zombie. This wasn't bad, per say, but it was just kind of depressing and boring. Not really worth sitting through, either.


However, as bad as the two I named above were, they were a HELL of a lot better than the remake of The Fog. This makes the biggest mistake a horror movies can make (and especially a remake), and that's just being a boring limp dick of a movie. There isn't even a tenth of the spookiness John Carpenter brought to the original Fog in this. This is the epitome of a boring/bad remake.


All right....time to hit that half way point for 2005.
