It wouldn't surprise me either way. Smaller markets need to pour gas on the fire when they get the chance, but it also makes plenty of sense not to since it's hard for non-super teams to turn a big profit in luxury tax hell. Yea, like OKC footed a big bill for a long time and they have the fan turn out to justify it but I couldn't blame the owner for saying nah i'm done Cavs owner Dan Gilbert may be an idiot but he took on a big bill for LeBron and paid that money out. Not a lot of owners will be willing to but in this NBA climate you have to a least give yourself a 5 year window to do whatever it takes if you are in the position to winΒ It's different when LeBron made you the favorite in the NBA, assembled his own super team, and gave you the Conference title by addition as well as being a local goldmine of merch. Portland could add another decently big name, but it really affords them none of that. Then again, most of that could have been said of Kawhi and he actually ended up doing a lot of that. They aren't adding a Kawhi caliber player though. I'm not going to say Portland for sure wouldn't be a luxury tax team, but I do think they'd be reluctant to.

If Portland could get a 3rd big star who fit's in with Lillard or McCollum it would be a case whether a Billionare Owner would rather chase a ring for a few years or be a Billionare Owner with a slightly higher net worth and not lose that money in a luxury tax? Who knows maybe Dan Gilbert secretly would rather have an extra 50 Million dollars or so in his portfolio and trade the ring he won,but if your rich beyond imagination maybe being in the rarified air Owner who won an NBA Ring is worth it. OKC Owner would clearly rather have that green since he traded Harden a year early instead of trying to make another go with the OKC team who went to the finals.

Oh yeah without question their is a big difference between LeBron being a money maker and everywhere else. I guess my basic point is if you feel like you have a chance like Portland has had over the last few years, I give them props for going after it Also Portland was a luxury tax team. In fact, if i'm not mistaken they had one of the highest payrolls a few years ago thanks to some crazy deals like the Evan Turner deal

I figured with their roster set-up in recent years that there was no way they were that high. But I do remember them dealing Crabbe to cut cost. Big money to Evan Turner, gross. They could have made more noise last season had Nurkic's leg not exploded. I wouldn't expect him to be back in form this season, and Whiteside is basically just what Kanter was for them last season.

www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/27308246/after-doubts-melo-confident-wants-playMelo went on first take to speak on a few things. He said the way his Rockets stint ended he didn't know if he still wanted to be in the NBA. He said he didn't CP3 or Coach Mike for his rockets exit. He said Morey telling him his services were no longer needed was a gut punch and and a shot to the ego because he felt like he was being "fired" in the same way other people are in a 9-5. He said he feels like he can still play and silence is not his surrender. He needed to step away from the game but he has been in the gym working hard everyday because he know he can still contribute to a team. He also cleared up the report that he wanted a farewell tour and he said he doesn't want that.

Yea it didn't come across that way but he can lean on the excuse of it was taken out of context. Also, LeBron camp reached out to him and he said some parts weren't in full clarity but that doesn't mean he didn't mean all of it More so surprised he walked it back so fast

And it's funny, I always liked VanVleet from his college days, but man I think he's getting overrated now. I get why a team would throw a bunch of money at him because this is the era of chucking threes. But I don't think he's really that good of a player on his own.

Vanvleet is a very good backup but yeah I wouldn't put him as a key piece of my team but he is no doubt going to get some good money by next season. I assume Toronto pays him and keeps the team around Siakim and Vanvleet will take over the PG position from Lowry. People remember what Vanvleet did his last 3 weeks of the playoffs instead of the first 2 months were he couldn't buy a bucket But yeah, we always see a backup PG get paid big money and then see they weren't really worth that money. Reggie Jackson, Dennis Schroder, and Terry Rozier (with his new contract we shall see) are the most recent examples.

Everything Iβve read or watched about Klay Bennett indicates that he only cares about the money and not winning. I donβt think Presti wanted Harden gone. Bennett couldβve saved the SuperSonics but he preferred to have them die since he was more connected in Oklahoma.

Some offseason news
- Jerian Grant is going to play overseas. Crazy to remember Knicks trade THJ for him to draft him in the 1st round. Vets like Felton, Harris, Livingston, Lin are still on the board
- D'aron Fox is on the team USA roster with a thousand people dropping out of it
- John Wall felt he was the "worst contract in NBA history" while he has been injured

I've never been a fan of Wall's style of play. I do not believe him to be the sort that wills a team to win. He seems like the sort just wants to make sure he gets his numbers and the paycheck clears.
That said, he's an amazing talent. I wouldn't build a team around him unless I didn't care about winning.
