We enter 2008, which will have Nine Lists. This will be the First. Vote for your favorite movie from this part of this year, and, as always, explain your choice (if you like), as well as mention any other movies you might have seen on this list, below.

We will also accept Write in Votes (although, please mention it as such) for movies not included on the list I'm getting the choices off of. However, I will not remove any from the list (I can't by that point), so, if you want to make your case why a certain movie isn't a horror film, make it. Hell, you might end up swaying a few voters from going in that direction, but I can't/won't remove it from the list or DQ it.

I've actually seen Sharks In Venice. That movie is so pathetic. Like, most of the shark attacks have nothing to do with the actual plot and Stephen Baldwin looks like he'd rather do anything else.

Attack Girls Swim team vs the Undead-Really sleazy and fun J-horror. New girl in school joins the swim team. A virus gets out and everybody in the school turns into zombies. But something in the swimming pool prevents the swim team from turning. Has a odd scene were we learn the new girl has hidden a tiny laser gun in her privates. Since I figure Let the right one in is going to get most of the votes,and it should since it is a great film,I am voting for Attack Girls Swim Team vs the Undead.

One Eyed Monster-Cheap horror with the lady that played Willow's girlfriend on Buffy and Ron Jeremy. I enjoy cheap cheesy horror,but this film was too cheap and too cheesy. You know a film isn't going to be good with the Hedgehog is the best actor in the film.

Return to Sleepaway Camp-I love the Sleepaway Camp franchise. And waited 3 or so years for this film to get released. It is a love it or hate it film. With most people hating it. While it isn't as good as the first 3 Sleepaway Camp films it is not horrible.

Bikini BLoodbath Car Wash- Cheap film with Debbie Rochon. Avoid this. Going into the film I expected some cheap laughs and abundant nudity. I got neither.

Live Animals-Now unlike lots of modern horror fans I do not hate the torture porn subgenre of horror. But this is one of the worst torture porn films I have seen. Got it in a pack with 3 other films for 5 bucks. And felt ripped off.

Let the Right one in-Damn good vampire movie. And one that I feel like a major plot point doesn't get picked up by most viewers. The vampire girl.. if you watch closely and pay close attention to what she says...well you will find out she use to be a boy. But even if this plot point isn't caught by most viewers this is still one of the best vampire films in a long time. The only drawback is the first DVD release had some badly done subtitles. If you end up with the first release on DVD watch the movie dubbed. Cause there is many parts of the film where the subtitles either skip or get wrong lots of the dialogue.

Trailer Park of Terror-Based on a comic I had never heard of. This is a fun horror comedy. Trace Atkins stars as a kind of devil. This has decent FX work,good acting and is worth tracking down.

I was scrolling down the list, getting worried I'd have to give a vote to RETURN TO SLEEPAWAY CAMP as the only thing on the list I'd seen (and didn't like at all)! Luckily, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is down towards the bottom. Which I gave my vote to. Good film!

Although I said I wouldn't be writing too many more long form responses, talking about movies I had seen on a particular list, this is one of those exceptions, as I have seen a few on this particular list. It's not going to last, though, as I was still working at a video store in 2008. I was done in 2009 (well, it was done shortly after, but I moved away), so, my horror watching, at least where it relates to newer horror, shrinks quite a bit after this year.


However, one of the movies I did see on this list (and voted for), and the one that won, was Let The Right One In, which is a very different take on the whole vampire mythos. Basically this is really kind of a demonstration on how a vampire grooms a new watch human to watch over them while they sleep, as that's what occurs the whole movie with the "friendship" between the lead and the young vampire he becomes somewhat smitten by. I particularly love the scene that shows what does happen to a vampire that enters a place they're not invited into. It's pretty crazy shit. This movie is definitely worth watching.


My second choice would be Repo: The Genetic Opera, which is a pretty interesting Horror/Drama/Musical set in a somewhat apocalyptic future where new body parts are loaned out to people. However, if one doesn't pay for said limb, then the Repo man is sent out to reclaim them, and he is one of our main characters in this movie (played by Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Anthony Stewart Head, who does a KICK ass job in his role). Another is a young girl who turns out to be the Repo Man's daughter (played by Alexa Vega from the Spy Kids franchise; she's probably the weakest part of this, though). However, the rest of the casting has some interesting choices, and the overall look of the film definitely wins out over some of the weaknesses. It's no Phantom of the Paradise, but it's definitely worth checking out.


Saw V was definitely fully in to the "Law & Order with torture traps" mode, as I think even the producers of the franchise realized they messed up killing Tobin Bell off so quickly, as, unlike Jason, there would be no resurrection of Jigsaw that wouldn't cause the series to jump the shark more than it already had by this point. This is also the last one I would make it a point to watch, so, if anyone else wants to comment on the other Saws, they are more than welcome.


Trailer Park of Terror was an OK anthology type of movie that tries to kind of replicate the Rob Zombie white trash horror feel, although, without Zombie's sense of style. It's OK, though, as was Return to Sleepaway Camp, which did try to bring things back full circle to the original Sleepaway Camp (including casting the actress that played the original killer, Felissa Rose). The result was mixed, but it was an interesting attempt, so, I definitely can give the movie some points for that.
