I probably won't see this in theaters, but will give it a try when it comes out on Netflix or TV.
I think my favorite part about the build up to it has been James Willems' obsession with the movie on the Funhaus videos and everyone else's apathy towards it. I'll miss that, haha.

An Oscar Award winning director, making a large budget movie based on one of the longest running Broadway musicals of all time written by one of the biggest names in the genre. Doesn't seem like it'd be hard to get big names involved to some degree... especially people that would like to break into movies like Taylor Swift. That makes sense because I was thinking of Movie 43 which had a MASSIVE star cast and it turned out that most of them were forced into being in it. I'm nowhere familiar with Tom Hooper's work, but I just searched his movies and it seems so bizarre that somebody with very Oscar-ish movies made this scary CGI nightmare. It's not bizarre at all - it's almost expected. When you think of the people who excel at directing big FX movies, it's the people who either came from the FX world themselves (James Cameron, Peter Jackson) or have had extensive relationships with it while progressing up the success ladder from the bottom (Del Toro, Spielberg). Someone who made it to the top and only then gave a big FX movie a shot often ends up with mud on their face.

It was the second worst movie I've seen this year. Kind of felt like a nightmare that wouldn't end although two of the songs were good.

It was the second worst movie I've seen this year. Kind of felt like a nightmare that wouldn't end although two of the songs were good. This really begs the question: what was the worst movie you've seen this year? A Japanese movie with a title that translates to Half the World, I'm not sure if it has an official English title. The original title is 半世界/Hansekai. It was like 2 hours of utter dreck. It changes plots like 6 or 7 times, but for all these plot threads there's simultaneously nothing happening in nearly any given scene. I love slice of life stuff, my favorite movie ever is a three-hour slice of life film called The Taste of Tea, but this didn't even count as that. It was just all over the place. The acting isn't bad, exactly, but no one seems to be sure of what kind of movie they're in so there is a hesitant quality to all of it, and there aren't any likable characters to be found. Also, like 70% of the way into the movie, they snip nearly every dangling thread of plot and it just kind of lets the current take it to a flaccid denouement. It's simultaneously way too long but you also think "wait, that's it?" when it's done. Also, because movie tickets are hella expensive in Japan and they didn't let me get a student discount like I normally do I spent like $22 on it.

That's... something. Like, they spent $95 million dollars and that was the result?

My mother was annoyed with me for not wanting to go with her to see this. She refuses to go to movies alone, so I feel like I spared her AND myself after seeing these clips.

I'm nowhere familiar with Tom Hooper's work, but I just searched his movies and it seems so bizarre that somebody with very Oscar-ish movies made this scary CGI nightmare. Judi Dench was actually supposed to be in the original London production of Cats but an injury prevented her from doing it. So she might have been in a "Hey, I finally get to be in Cats!" mood. If you think back to high school, most of the productions put on by drama clubs are musicals. Most actors get their start singing and dancing, so it's probably not too difficult to find ones that enjoyed it/miss it and want to do the occasional one on the big screen.

It also definitely seems to be a case, much like Snakes on a Plane, where there's a big yawning gap between ironic "I must see this!" response and actual cold light of day going and putting money down for a ticket. I reckon it'll do great on something like Netflix where people already have a subscription running. The curiosity will be high. But it's gonna be one of the bigger bombs of the year, and I really don't see the Oscars wanting to give it much spotlight. Yeah, I have a feeling a lot of the "I really need to see this monstrosity" are going to wait for it to be streaming rather than pay movie theater prices to see something awful. Yup, I desperately wanna see this train wreck but I’ll be damned if I’m paying $12 to do it. Maybe I’d do a cheap Tuesday $6 viewing, but even that would require the right person to go with to make it fun

I hung out with my two gay friends and a female friend last night. They all love plays and musicals and stuff. I threw it out there and asked if anybody wanted to see this trainwreck. The gay guys shot it down very quickly, while the lone woman genuinely thinks it looks ok. Then we all made fun of her. 😁

It’s kinda hilarious that the reviews are so bad, they don’t even have an ad with positive review quotes.

Mr. Sheffield is having the last laugh They do move to Hollywood in the finale. I like to think Mr. Sheffield produced this movie to make up for his "mistake".

As most of you know I do film reviews for my Facebook and YouTube. One of my friends asked me if I watched this yet and I simply told her "I prefer the original Broadway from the eighties."
That's usually what I tell people now whenever they ask me about watching this version.

I love musicals and like to to see them when they're in theaters to support the genre, but I don't want to see this. It just doesn't look good.
