Been watching late 80's/early 90's WCW and for as much flack as Vince gets for pulling the rug out from Lex at Summerslam, the NWA jerked Lex around far far worse. Luger was white hot on several occasions and was prime to take the title from Flair and it never ever happened. Not only did it not happen, but it didn't happen in dumber ways. The referee stopping the match because of blood, Lex getting counted out while the Horsemen attack him, The Horsemen run in during a cage match and cause a DQ. Lex finally gets the title in 1991, but he never beats Flair for it and as soon as he does win it, they immediately turn him heel. NWA jerked Lex around big time.

I really liked Luger's work from 88 to 92. In my opinion he's the best US champion ever.

It's 2019 and we still do the goddamn "I Don't Know" joke *shakes head for another 15 years* Anyways, Luger is Exhibit A in the counter-argument for the "Duhhh, WCW couldn't book a star. Only Mr Mackmahon could book a star" argument. The guy was always a star in NWA/WCW, awful in WWF. I also liked the fact that he was really the catalyst for Sting's turn into the Crow; after Sting had his back when no one else did the year before, Luger let his paranoia get the best of him and refused to believe Sting was still with WCW and that was the cruelest cut of all for the Stinger. Continuity in wrestling, a concept! I don't know if it was Luger and Sting being sharp enough to know that nobody was paying attention, or just the one bit of consistent booking greatness that Eric never let go of, but the relationship of Sting and Luger throughout all of wrestling is a beautiful thing in kayfabe and shoot. Greater or lesser than Davey Boy Smith? Greater in every single column. Except possibly shoot strength, and biggest draw as headliner to a single show.

Lex had a very good career, but I will always think first of his losses on big stages. His losses to Flair at GATB 1988 and Starrcade 1988 gave him a label of a choker. In the WWF, his losses at SummerSlam 1993 and WrestleMania X permanently damaged any chance of Lex being a top guy in the WWF. It didn’t help also that he celebrated his countout win over Yoko at SummerSlam 93 like he won the World Series.
