I remember my dad telling me he died while getting ready for school. Just really bummed out. I just knew him from SpaceBalls, Little Shop of Horrors, The Great Outdoors, and Uncle Buck at that point. All favorites then and now.
And I am praying that one day I get to use the line, "Get in your mouse, and get out of here."

(sorry, couldn't resist) Because he cared about education! You got a f***ing problem with that?! lol. Good catch on the wording.

John Candy was awesome. I thought he funny when I was a kid. But looking at the clips posted in this thread as a 36 year old man, I can appreciate him more as an amazing actor.
Dude is still missed.

I was also getting ready for school when I learned he had died. When I turned the television on that morning, my parents had left it on NBC from watching the news the night before. So the first thing I saw was the morning news with the story about Candy having a heart attack in the middle of filming Wagons East. I was so sad that day as he was one of my favorites. In later years, I had a great night showing a good friend the film Uncle Buck. He had seen so many Candy flicks but didn't know this movie existed. It was like discovering a hidden treasure. Anyways, here's part 1 of 5 of a great tribute to him.

John Candy is the best thing about almost everything he's in. It's really quite extraordinary. I usually hate actors who play the same part in every movie - and like Hit Girl said earlier, I would kill to see him take on something more dramatic - but Candy was just... such a genial screen presence.

My personal favorite of his lesser-known ones is 'Delirious,' the "JESUS H CHRIST, LAURA!" he does near the beginning of the film is priceless! Me and my brother said 'Jesus H Christ Lord' --about everything-- for weeks after we first watched this movie , and the story's pretty fun. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_B3vLbV6yI

Will try to see more of his work,as a kid i loved him in Uncle Buck and Home alone, he was always fun and had a great smile. Seemed like a really nice chap to, always feel gutted that he left us to soon. John, Jim Varney and Robin Williams were my faves as a kid and it sucks that all of them are gone now.

So I love him in Home Alone, because he gets a lot of humor out of being in a polka band, but it is so much funnier if you've spent any time with polkas or polka bands and realize he's not really exaggerating anything at all. It's easy to make a mockery of polka and have a quick laugh, but the humor is deeper because his performance is EXACTLY how a lot of polka band leaders are. He was so great with comedy that was on the surface funny but also could hit a deeper level. And his dramatic performances just used that comedic timing to perfection.

He turns this scene on a dime. Absolutely hysterical from the embarrassment to absolutely dismantling someone who doesn’t see the value in his niece. Candy is honestly so much better an actor than he is given credit.
