So, the Red Rooster. Bad gimmick, right?
But what's a good gimmick.
"How was he supposed to get over, a male hairdresser!"
"No wonder he wasn't successful, pretend the guy is the 'undead' for crying out loud!"
"Nobody could get over in a goofy corrections officer uniform like he's in the village people"
"Polkadots? When did anyone ever put an ass in a seat wearing polkadots?"
"What chance did he have lumbered with an Elvis impersonator gimmick?"
If any of the above gimmicks didn't work to the degree that they did then how would any of the above looked any different to:
"Who could get over being a Garbage man?"
"Sparky Plug? He was buried before he even started!"
A bad gimmick isn't simply defined as someone not getting it over, is it? Anyone other than Wayne Farris pretending to be Elvis probably would have sucked, but does that mean the gimmick itself was awful or simply that any gimmick put with someone who can't make it work would be viewed as an awful gimmick but every gimmick can work if paired with someone capable of making it work.

There are probably some gimmicks that are inherently counterproductive to getting babyface cheers or heel heat that they could be classified as worthless.

Even that, if played by someone else maybe it could have worked? Never as world champion material but an obese, obnoxious slob isn't as far fetched or ridiculous as some of the gimmicks mentioned above, all of whom got over. If given to someone who could make 'obese, obnoxious slob who's always eating' work then it wouldn't be a bad gimmick. It's a bad gimmick because it was given to someone who didn't make it work. Put Virgil in a correction officer's uniform and you've got something absolutely atrocious. But with Ray Traylor the gimmick worked. Mike Shaw's Bastion Booger didn't get over. Someone else's might have done. |

Anyone else would have failed as Undertaker, tons of people would have bombed as the Honky Tonk Man; ill-fitting gimmicks that don't suit the talent are definitely bad, there's something to be said for misuse of talent as an objectively bad idea. But past that, I do think some ideas are dumb and bad and work in some way in spite of themselves; Undertaker's character is absolutely stupid in several ways and the more you get into the layers and the biker years and the Kane stuff, the more baffling it becomes. It didn't succeed in any way because the gimmick itself was good--which isn't to say it was bad, but it wasn't 'a good gimmick'--it succeeded through the combination of the talent behind the act, and the writing that put the act into stories people got invested in. Sometimes that's enough to overcome the ludicrous nature of what's there, but it's rare.

There are some gimmicks that no matter who is playing it, sucks. Nobody could gotten dress like a turkey (Goobley Gooker) to work. Anything at the first site the announcers are laughing at it, is pretty much dead in the water.
Some of it is timing as well, If Wayne Farris, debut today as the Honky Tonk Man, would it been successful? No. If Hulk Hogan debut today would it been as big as it was? Doubt it. Nobody is going to buy a leg drop finisher in 2019.
Now yes there are other "bad" gimmicks that could have worked with the right guy. Just would have to think real hard about gimmicks and who you think could made it work. Sometimes it because the guy behind it just was a terrible worker but the idea may not been bad on paper.
