I think the thing that should scare him about Avatar 2 and 3 is that Avatar mostly sucks, has ages poorly and has no positive hype like....at all. The fact that Avatar has like no pop culture penetration or staying power is the biggest strike againts having any sequels...

Also, can we just marvel on how dumb it is that the main character of his serious furry blue monster movie is named Sully? It's like if I wanted to do a raunchy sex comedy with a kid and an old man and named them Russell and Carl.

I swear to god that when it came out I didn't even get that it was supposed to be a big deal, so when it made a shit load of money I was really confused. I actually knew a guy who told me that it was the best sci-fi movie he had ever seen and nothing even begins to compare.

You'd think in all this time they'd have made a video game, animated series or something to try and keep the property in people's minds. It was a big deal, if you had a Netflix series in say 2012 there probably would have been an audience.

The funny thing is, as much money as it made, I don't think there's that much of a market for Avatar. They pretty much captured the most marketable part of Avatar with Pandora at Disney World. The story is too generic to do much with a video game, and none of the characters are interesting or even memorable enough to sell a spin-off series.

Isn't Avatar's pop culture penetration precisely the conversation that people don't understand how it doesn't have any pop culture penentration? For 10 years, this is precisely what people have talked about, "how did *this* movie make so much money?" Even after the financial success Avengers: Endgame, people are still fascinated by Avatar's very existence as a box office phenomenon.

Wasn't Avatar in theaters for 10 months and got a 3D re-release during it? That might explain why considering the average length is three months or so

Wasn't Avatar in theaters for 10 months and got a 3D re-release during it? That might explain why considering the average length is three months or so It was released December 16 and left theatres on August 12. In that time it saw an extended edition rerelease and a 4D rerelease. Another contributing factor for its lengthy run was the fact that its release was delayed from May until December to give theatres time to install the necessary equipment for 3D screenings. These installations were expensive, which encouraged theatres to milk every last cent out of the movie to help offset the cost.

Honestly, I think Avatar does provide material that can be expanded upon. If you have a good writer......James cameron isnt a good writer.

Since this is an Avatar thread I just have to say that those blue creatures in the movie were ugly as shit.

I don't particularly care for Cameron, but I have to disagree with that last part. He wrote the first two Terminator movies, The Abyss, and Aliens, while True Lies and Strange Days are very underrated. He's gotten lazier and more formulaic in his writing since the mid-'90s, I'll grant you, relying more on spectacle and pushing technical boundaries, but the man can write a great story. That's certainly not to say I think anything great will come out of these Avatar sequels. He writes stuff to showcase gimmicks now, and any story written to show off underwater motion capture really doesn't inspire me.

Now it seems he's out of ideas, and just an old man stuck in his ways. If somebody else were to be handed the writing and directing duties of the Avatar sequels, then I'd be on board.

I watched Avatar for the first time since I bought home the DVD when I first came out, mainly cause we're headed for Disney in 3 weeks and it really is an unremarkable movie. I remember thinking it was the prettiest movie I'd ever seen when I saw it in 3D in the theater but watching it home...man its boring as hell. Still can't wait to go to World of Pandora tho
