The rat symbolizes obviousness. It's a metaphor for other rats. Like Master Splinter?

I do on some level understand his point about the theme park thing, and really I kind of agree on that, but I also don't think that's mutually exclusive with being genuine cinema, because really so long as what you've made is, like, a movie, then it's a movie.

I wonder how he feels about a non MCU Marvel film like X-Men: Days of Future Past? That's a comic film that does have the emotional, psychological stuff he wants. I think he's using Marvel as an umbrella term for comic book movies in general, since the things he's describing aren't limited to the MCU. There's a few films that obviously break the mould (like Logan and Joker), but for the most part they all share the same DNA and they're all "theme parks" to varying degrees. That's not stopping idiot brand loyalists piping up with "You tell 'em Marty!" comments.

I feel like if he'd have just said that he tried watching them and they weren't his thing, there wouldn't be an issue, but the gatekeeping is a bad look. Cinema contains multitudes, and always has.

"I love you, 3000"
don't tell me Marvel films can't be emotional
Scorsese is one of my favourite directors of all time but I just can't agree with him on this

The rat symbolizes obviousness. It's a metaphor for other rats. One might say it represented those that 'ratted out' their compatriots.

He is trying to say he doesn't like the CGI standing in for an actor? That's the vibe I'm getting with his comment about humans conveying emotion with other humans. Like walking thru a themepark full of animatronics instead of people? I mean, it is a little different, but Hugo used about 800 VFX shots.

Films are deep. Blah blah blah. Can old white movie makers just shut the f*** up already. Cut that crap out. Seriously. Why is this kind of stuff overlooked here? It violates the rules about prejudice, and surely the mods see it. Change "white" to anything else and it's probably an insta-ban, no?

And if Marvel came knocking and wanted Marty to make something with DeNiro and/or DiCaprio, he would conveniently change his tune. Or even if he saw the budget and his paycheck.
And I say that with Goodfellas being my favorite movie of all time.

Hmm. (Kidding, I didn’t mind Shark Tale)

Change "white" to anything else and it's probably an insta-ban, no? No. No it's not. And never think that comments like that get overlooked. We remember.

It'd be nice to see something done about it, because it's become pretty prevalent. A month or two back someone said a thread was "getting/got too white" for f***'s sake. I'm not going to keep going unless someone replies since I should've posted this in Ask A Mod anyway.

.. so changing that and saying that...is allowed? It wouldn’t be an insta-ban? 😳 No. What it would be is a warning, moving posts, making a note on a user's profile, a discussion with the staff, including the owners of the website, and then monitoring that user. If it was an instant ban for comparable posts, plenty of peop!e would be gone. And, often enough, that person continues saying dumb shit, they get banned. Now, if someone flat out uses a slur against someone or something comparable? They're gone.

Roger Ebert was a wonderful critic for these sorts of things - he tried to judge movies by what genre they were, and what they were trying to accomplish. Ehhhhh, he still had his moments of very stupid elitism, like the way he'd throw absolute tantrums over slasher movies. He also made some bizarre calls like declaring The Mummy 3 to be the best in the franchise. And there was his "video games aren't art" period.
