But yeah, this is a Cornette-esque "I don't get/like it, therefore it's not valid" kind of shitty take.

I get what he means, and to a small degree I agree. But oh man, do I wish he thought twice before speaking up about it.

He is kind of correct, but then again, I'm the person who made a thread complaining about how much I despise the MCU so any disdain about them I'll jump on with near Pavlovian reflexes.

These kinds of comments are disrespectful as hell to everyone who works on Marvel films. Tell Ryan Coogler that Black Panther is crap to his face. Go ahead, Martin. I'll wait. I can't imagine Martin Scorsese would have any issue telling Ryan Coogler he thinks his movies suck if he was placed in a situation where the conversation swung that way. Like, what the hell's anyone going to do to stop him? And if Marvel came knocking and wanted Marty to make something with DeNiro and/or DiCaprio, he would conveniently change his tune. Or even if he saw the budget and his paycheck. And I say that with Goodfellas being my favorite movie of all time. C'mon. That's definitely not true and I'm sure you know it. To begin with the guy has no interest in making a Marvel movie. I very much doubt he needs the money and even if he did he's repeatedly shown that he can go commercial on his own terms. Disney might be able to hook random indie director X into their producer-driven system, but your James Gunns and your Martin Scorseses are very different people.

I really don’t fault or care about him not being reverent toward funny book movies. Its really no big deal.
Throwing out money figures or cultural impact is just twisting in the wind to try and prove something to someone that will never change their opinion on a thing that doesn’t matter.

"It's not Cinema" is a stupid take.
Art made for money is still art.
saying it's not my cup of tea, or I don't really care about them is one thing... saying it's not art because I don't like it is just a really dumb take.

If you didn't feel at least sad at THAT Infinity War scene, you have no soul I didn’t. I felt it was deserved. Scott Lang at the beginning and talking to his daughter? that broke my f***ing heart.

I agree with him if I define cinema strictly as a sort of artistic movie going experience. I think the marvel movies, and other mega blockbusters, are too far removed from being an expression of a person, or a small group of people's, vision. They feel like they are made by a committee, designed to accomplish certain marketing things. Too many voices eventually becomes a sort of no voice. Which is fine, I like a whole bunch of the marvel movies (not being so much a reflection of a persons thoughts on something doesn't make them bad movies, they are certainly technical achievements and have witty writing and what not) and if you are gonna have budgets like that you have to design your film with making crazy amounts of money in mind. I think he is dead on saying they are like an amusement park ride.

Martin Scorsese has made some of my absolute favorite films, so I very much respect his opinions, but I disagree.
I don't watch the Marvel films, but everyone I know who does: not only enjoys them, but are clearly emotionally invested into the films and their stories. To me, that's what cinema is supposed to do, it's supposed to elicit something out of the viewer, no matter the genre.

You should teach a seminar for cranky filmmakers.

I mean, I get it, a lot of Marvel movies are by the books blockbuster types, entertaining as hell and really well made, but not something that changes your outlook on something.
That being said, while he's made some great movies, Scorcese has made a lot of crap. Some of it is loved by specific segments of the population, but a lot of it is crap.

I don't really understand why people would care or why they'd be surprised.
In no way would I have thought Scorsese would like superhero movies anyway, but ya know whatever. I still like them and him.
My best friend isn't a fan of Monty Python; doesn't mean I'm gonna beat him with a pillowcase fulla doorknobs.

Who's to say what is or isn't cinema? Scorsese is one of my all-time favorite filmmakers, but I don't think even he gets to make that determination.

I usually go with the point of view that all art is valid, even if it's f***ing terrible with only a few very specific examples to the contrary. So that's why I really don't like the whole "they're not cinema" thing because I think even the worst movies are cinema. Manos: The Hands of Fate is as much cinema as Citizen Kane.
But then I'm also not surprised that someone of Scorsese's stature is going to be a snob about blockbusters.
