Fried Chicken ignorance defense is feasible if one is from a European or Asian country with a small black population and little familiarity with African American history. Cornette is from Kentucky.

Okay, I was going to watch my first episode of NWA Power soon but not after this. Shame on everyone involved for letting this is hideous racist "joke" air.

In the last 3 weeks Cornette has told someone they should kill themselves for not wearing a suit when ring announcing Said someone looked like a pedophile for wearing a suit and smiling Made nasty racist remarks about some of the Japanese women wrestlers in AEW And now made this offensive racist remark on NWA. What a horrible, horrible man. Surely NWA have to shitcan him now? Don't forget, he also accused a girl of sleeping her way to the top of a division because her friend, who helps book the company, has a "Japanese schoolgirl fetish".

It’s still crazy to me how vehemently people defend him.

2 weeks from now: Cornette says the N word. "Are we sure that Cornette meant that?" Either that or Corny claims it was clearly a "joke" and he's confused why everyone is offended.

Cornette is betting Corgan is too cowardly to get rid of him. Prove him wrong, Billy.

This is the guy who made a joke about the Challenger disaster on TBS the same year as the actual disaster. Well, it would've aired had Dusty not shut down production and told Cornette to do the promo again.

Yeesh. I thought that's what I heard earlier but I was cooking dinner while the show was on and my brain didn't really process it.
As others have said earlier here, if one really wants to defend Cornette on this the best that can be offered is "fried chicken is a stereotype used on African Americans, not people in Africa". Doesn't change that your primary audience is still based in the country where that stereotype is very much a thing and will likely and understandably react to it, and that the expression in and of itself is tasteless and unnecessary even if the chicken stereotype is taken out of the equation, just lazy as hell.
The only other defense I can think of is "it's an old expression he's used before, he used it off the cuff without thinking it through, and NWA screwed up by not spotting it, editing it out well in advance, and talking to Cornette about it as soon as they did to tell him expressions like that won't fly." Problem there is that Cornette has burned up just about any good will he's ever had among large swaths of wrestling fandom because he keeps saying awful shit, so it's a LOT harder to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I suppose Jim could come out and give an earnest "I really @#$%ed up on that one, it's a phrase I've used in the past but I should be more on the ball if I'm going to be an announcer in the modern wrestling landscape" apology, but, well...it's Cornette, so I'm not banking on it, and again I wouldn't really be able to blame people who'd have a hard time accepting even a good apology after all the other stuff he's done and said. Is that fair? Maybe, maybe not, but it's reality: there are consequences to whittling away your good will in pursuit of grifter dollars from really awful people who like shitting on others for no good reason.

Which is why I asked my question. People seemed big on the racist aspect, when it seems like much more of a “All Ethiopians are starving” joke than a “All black people like fried chicken” joke. And until pretty recently, starving Ethiopians jokes were pretty prevalent in American pop culture, so I didn’t think people would be that shocked by that aspect. He made a joke about black people and fried chicken. Why are you feigning ignorance and trying to defend this? Just following Corny's lead. Corny frequently feigns ignorance to get away with his offensive comments. It was just a joke, why are you mad bro?

When it comes to copping to a bad statement and owning the mistake, the reason Cornette doesn't get any benefit of the doubt is because he doesn't cop to the shit he says and back down from them, he just doubles down and lashes out at people for them. Getting called out for telling a woman to spend more time in the kitchen has him talking about how that's the place the 'average American housewife' is because statistics or some bullshit like that. He'll go off on how everyone is too sensitive on his podcast, fess up to nothing, and then next time this goes down people will wonder why everyone's assuming the worst of him. Rinse and repeat.

Here he is back in January, advocating and calling for the Nazi concentration camp-style murder of wrestlers who say wrestling is staged:
