Kinda inspired by the worst SNL season thread. SNL has had a ton of talent over the years, but some people just haven't worked out for one reason or another. Curious to see who people think should have been a bigger deal/better used on the show.
A semi recent pick for me: Vanessa Bayer. Granted, she had a few characters (Bar Mitzvah boy, Rachel from Friends) but outside of those....she was kinda just....there.

Given his longevity as a comedy character actor in movie/TV for almost 25 years now, I can't believe David Koechner only lasted 1 season on SNL (the first season after the mass firings, which gave us Will Ferrell, Oteri, Kattan & that wave of comedians).

I adore Vanessa Bayer. Oh well.
If this is about cast members that shone elsewhere but failed on SNL, the list is pretty long, but clearly at the top are Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Robert Downey Jr.

Rob Riggle has gone on to have a modestly successful career with notable roles in "Stepbrothers," "The Other Guys," and the "21 Jump Street" movies and gigs on "The Daily Show" and FOX NFL Sunday (and he's a decorated former U.S. Marine), but he never rose above being a featured player in one season - the notably terrible Season 30.
Jeff Richards came into SNL in 2002 already with a strong reputation for his celebrity impersonations (among them an absolutely perfect Al Franken and David Letterman), but he just sort of faded into the background and was gone within two seasons.
Also, if we're talking about people who SNL continued to push despite them clearly not getting over, look no further than Rachel Dratch. She got eight years and dozens of recurring characters despite only one of them really landing (and Debbie Downer landed by accident, only because the actors broke in the skit.)

I'd argue that the Sully and Denise skits that Dratch had were popular, but your point stands. I barely remember Richards. He had.....uh... the Drunk Girl character on 'Update'...and...that's all I got. Good call on David Koechner. Given his talents, I get the sense that they had NO idea how to write for him

The only thing she did was accidentally swearing on her first episode. I feel like she was fired pretty quickly after that, which is a damn shame because she's hilarious

I still can't believe Abby Elliott, daughter of Chris Elliott, didn't make much of an impact on the show. I thought she was great, but I felt like she didn't get the same attention as other cast members in her 4 years there.

Woody Allen was friends with one of the producers. He was watching the audition tapes of the new cast members after the firings. He sat stone faced. Then Gilbert Gottfried came on and Woody asked “Is he a Navejo Indian?!”

But her tenure was around the time that Wiig was in every other skit.....so...*shrugs*

Bayer did Miley Cyrus, and I liked her kid news reporter on WU. Dratch was also half of the radio ladies with Gasteyer and the Lovers with Ferrell. I also liked Jeff Richards Bill O'Reilly.
I think Jim Breuer is up there. Dude had some hilarious stand-up, and some voices. I always thought Goat Boy was stupid though. And Abby had spot on Anna Faris and Brittney Murphy impressions. And Zoe Deschanel and Sarah Maclaughlin.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned Cheri Oteri. She seemed to be all over the show watching some old episodes but I guess being in the same cast as Will Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan gets lost in the shuffle when discussing that era.

Oh, Cheri Oteri was all over that show and thrived on it. For a time she and Molly Shannon were the core female presence on that show and they were great. Thing is, she's not quite as remembered years later like the others of her era is the lack of big Hollywood gigs during and after her run on the show. She pretty much solely worked on that show for 5 years; her biggest roles outside SNL during her tenure was the Inspector Gadget movie and spoofing Courtney Cox in Scary Movie. She's done a bunch of TV and had some movie parts since, but it's almost always guest star / short supporting roles....nothing at the Will Ferrell/Tina Fey level. Even if she'd gone as prolific as Molly Shannon with her acting career, she'd be remembered a LOT more I think. On my nephew's TV, though, she's been a regular - she's a voice on Puppy Dog Pals and is like in every episode (she and Stanley from The Office play vacationing neighbors who somehow always show up wherever the PDP are adventuring off too on the planet Earth), so I've heard her a lot the past few years.

But I thoguth she was great on Star vs the Forces of Evil, voices my favorite character.
