As great as Michael McKean was in Spinal Tap and Better Call Saul, he absolutely stunk on SNL. Season 20 was honestly one of the worst seasons too with the departure of Phil Hartman and the revolving door of cast members leaving the show.

Janeane Garofalo was already a well known name but can't remember her being in many sketches while she was there. She's been vocal over the years that she was absolutely miserable during her tenure because they never did anything with her aside from making her a wife/girlfriend in skits. She claims that no matter what she came up with, she was cast aside for whatever Sandler and Farley wanted to do That is such a weird thing since she was quite the get when they cast her. She was already putting out comedy specials, had been on other successful TV shows, and had a bunch of movies coming out during her time there that she filmed before she started (including Reality Bites). You would think they'd be keen on taking advantage of that and featuring her as much as they could.

Just feels like the writers really had no idea what to do with her (or Elliot, McKeon etc) once they got there.

Chris Guest, Billy Crystal, and Martin Short all did pretty well but that was also the Ebersol years.

So they said screw it and just hired a bunch of seasoned comedians and let them do their own things. Whereas, Garafalo, McKean and Elliot were hired at a point where the show was trying to plug the holes in a rapidly sinking ship, by hiring as many big names as they could, rather than just starting completely fresh. It took a few years and meddling from NBC before they finally fixed what was actually wrong.

I meant to mention him earlier, but Jay Pharroh. Seemed for a little bit like he might be a major star on the show and possibly break out down the road... but for whatever reason, it just didn't happen for the guy. That's who I wanted to mention as well. All the impressions he could do and he just never got as big as I felt he should've been.

Jay mohr not funny in anything ever I disagree SOLELY based on his story about hanging out with Tracy Morgan on the Oppie and Anthony show I'm not going to link due to language, but it's on YouTube and pure comedy God I miss O&A.

surprised Vanessa Bayer got mentioned, I can remember an whole bunch of stuff she did, even besides some recurring characters (and I can think of 4 of them off the top of my head) Yeah, I always thought she was solid, IMO.

Going with the current cast, I don’t get Kyle Mooney whatsoever. He’s painfully unfunny and I don’t get why he’s been on the show for a good amount of time now? I felt that way about Taran Killam. I just couldn't stand him at all.

Norm Mcdonald sucked. And so did his frank stallone jabs. Frank has hit records and awards.
The best stuff norm did was his burt reynolds.
The current lineup is okay.

Here's a pretty obvious one; the Jim Henson Creatures Workshop & "the Land of Gorch". Although risque content was something Jim wanted to venture in (given a special at the time was called "Sex and Violence", though that was a tongue in cheek name), the segments stunk & the rest of the SNL cast hated sharing space with Henson and his crew.
I'll also throw in Harry Shearer given what an afterthought he was during the decline of Lorne's first tenure & the issues during the mid 80s.

I had to look up the name to see who you were talking about. That's how little I care about him being on the show. He must be one hell of a writer because his time on screen isn't that great. And he pretty much plays every character he does the same way. And what about Jim Breuer? I found him funny and really thought Half Baked would be his break out role. But dude has seemed to fizzle out.
