Jay mohr not funny in anything ever I disagree SOLELY based on his story about hanging out with Tracy Morgan on the Oppie and Anthony show I'm not going to link due to language, but it's on YouTube and pure comedy

I meant to mention him earlier, but Jay Pharroh. Seemed for a little bit like he might be a major star on the show and possibly break out down the road... but for whatever reason, it just didn't happen for the guy.

I know it's not really the point of the thread. But it boggles my mind how guys like Jim Carrey and Kevin Hart failed their auditions for SNL. Must have been an awesome feeling to come back and host after that.

But he became an institution of pop culture in spite of being spurned by SNL.
As for Jenny Slate, she said that her leaving SNL in 2010 had nothing to do with her f-word slipup. It was just a bad fit overall.

Must have been an awesome feeling to come back and host after that. I think a lot of that is just the timing. Would Jim Carrey's style of comedy really worked on SNL? It worked great for In Living Color, but I don't know that it would have fit on SNL.

Woody Allen was friends with one of the producers. He was watching the audition tapes of the new cast members after the firings. He sat stone faced. Then Gilbert Gottfried came on and Woody asked “Is he a Navejo Indian?!” Speaking of people who fizzled out, I had forgotten Gilbert was on that show At the time, Gilbert was more "just a guy" and hadn't found the Gilbert persona we all know and love.

Stephen hasn't hosted yet, but he and Steve Carell (who also auditioned but didn't get cast) voiced the Ambiguously Gay Duo in those animated sketches. And Carell has hosted SNL a few times.

I still can't believe Abby Elliott, daughter of Chris Elliott, didn't make much of an impact on the show. I thought she was great, but I felt like she didn't get the same attention as other cast members in her 4 years there. Abby Elliot was outstanding. But her tenure was around the time that Wiig was in every other skit.....so...*shrugs* Really? I don't think I ever laughed at her once. Although, apparently there was some backstage bullshit with Fred Armisen and so I'm not super inclined to hold it against her.

Damon Wayans missed the mark so badly he was fired in the middle of the show.
Janeane Garofalo was already a well known name but can't remember her being in many sketches while she was there.

Janeane Garofalo was already a well known name but can't remember her being in many sketches while she was there. She's been vocal over the years that she was absolutely miserable during her tenure because they never did anything with her aside from making her a wife/girlfriend in skits. She claims that no matter what she came up with, she was cast aside for whatever Sandler and Farley wanted to do

Dude has spot on impressions of Obama, Denzel, Ben Carson, Chris Tucker, etc. Some funny stand-up, and a few movies. I believe he was in Unsane.

surprised Vanessa Bayer got mentioned, I can remember an whole bunch of stuff she did, even besides some recurring characters (and I can think of 4 of them off the top of my head)

For all of his post-SNL success, Chris Rock didn't have much of an impact on SNL. He was the forgotten one in the Sandler/Farley/Spade era.

Sarah Silverman never did anything of note on the show. Also important to note around that time Dave Attel was working as a writer on the show. Not a cast member, but given Dave's really a great in stand up I thought it was important to note his talents. You could say the same thing about Larry David and the impact he's had outside of SNL.

Going with the current cast, I don’t get Kyle Mooney whatsoever. He’s painfully unfunny and I don’t get why he’s been on the show for a good amount of time now?
