477. 13 Going On 30 (2004) – I've always been a fan of films with similar concepts of this (even if some of them are misfires). I like this one a lot thanks in no small part to a charming performance from Jennifer Garner, but she is supported well by the likes of Judy Greer (this as been like the third film I've watched with her in in the past few weeks) and Andy Serkis. A film I find extremely rewatchable.
478. All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989) – I used to watch this a lot as a kid but it's something for no real reason I've never. revisited as an adult until now. I think in a weird way one thing that drew me to this was the pairing of Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise (I was and am huge Cannonball Run fan), this held up really well for me,, thanks to the character and the relationship between Charlie and Anne-Marie (really sad what happened to Judith Barsi). Enjoyable.

#266 - Unstoppable
*HBOMax
It starts a bit slowly but once it gets to the meat of the tension, it keeps you excited. Plus, Washington and Pine have solid chemistry that manages to carry this to be something really enjoyable. [***]

246. Eaten Alive *DVD* Watching this I couldn’t help but feel like I’d seen this before. Moar violence against animals. Moar ritualistic rape. Moar bad wigs. Moar dicks being cut off. So while very similar to all the other cannibal movies I’ve seen this one goes another step and actually reuses scenes from other movies. I knew it when the scene with the natives raping and eating the one girl happened. It was from Man From Deep River, another cannibal movie I saw a few months ago. The only twist this added to the genre was there being an unwelcome cult living amongst the natives. I keep watching this crap in hopes of finding another movie that will hit me like Cannibal Holocaust but I don’t think I ever will. It certainly wasn’t this. The only positive here was Me Me Lai being topless the entire movie. She’s hot. The ending is pretty brutal too but some of that is more reused footage.

Two movies I enjoyed more than I thought I would on first viewing recently
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows - was like a love letter to the 80s cartoon fans. Everyone and everything was on point. Not going to win awards on originality or plot obviously.
Aquaman - yes please. More like this DC.

479. Blue Iguana (2018) – I'm a big fan of Sam Rockwell, to the point I'd probably put him in my top 10 favourite actors, so he was a deciding factor in choosing to watch this. This is a British set comedy crime movie that as some memorable moments, some funny one liners and enjoyable characters (particularly Simon Callow and Amanda Donohoe) but doesn't quite come together for whatever reason. Perfectly watchable but not great by any means.
480. Cobra (1986) – a dynamic opening and loads I really like about this like there is some cool action moments and often builds up tension well, but I think it's a bit disjointed – likely in part to a lot of the violence being cut down a lot. I still have a soft spot for Stallone movies of this era (I'm the same with Schwarzenegger) even if this isn't overall one of his best I still think it's worth a watch.
One note about Cobra is that I own a Japanese cinema flyer from around 1986, where it's a double bill of that movie and Police Academy 3: Back In Training, quite an interesting pairing.

Movie #853989438942898
2001 Maniacs
Hulu
Been at least a decade since I watched this remake of the HG Lewis classic gore film. Kinda still surprised at how good this was. Good gore, the cast is decent. And Robert England is great as the lead. Just wish the barrel roll kill from the original was in this film.

#267 - Batman Returns
*Blu-Ray
While no performance quite matches up to Jack Nicholson’s in the original, the work of Keaton, DeVito, Pfeiffer, and Walken make for a strong cast. The dark tone works and the action scenes are solid. They took risks with the sequel and most paid off. [***½]

481. Dirty Grandpa (2016) – first question, Robert De Niro, knowing for his method acting, does he still do the method acting for roles like this? Because he would have had an hell of a time doing method acting on this. The film is a perfectly watchable comedy, De Niro as a bunch of good lines and there is support from Aubrey Plaza AND Zoey Deutch – Plaza gets lots of funny lines while the talented Deutch gets few. The biggest negative was I wasn't a fan of the homophobia, which the film then as a weird message on.
482. Enola Holmes (2020) – Millie Bobby Brown stars as the younger sister of Sherlock (and Mycroft) in this fun mystery movie. Brown carries the movie really well in her first lead role in a film and she is ably supported by the likes of Henry Cavill (as Sherlock). While the central mystery is nothing original it's still great to go along for the ride. I'd welcome more films in this series (it's based on a YA series of books so it's possible)
483. Freeway (1996) – A dark modern take on Little Red Riding Hood. The film gets gripping once Reese Witherspoon meets Kiefer Sutherland. Witherspoon plays her role well as Sutherland gives an excellent performance that gets more uneasy until he reveals his true colours, and I like the direction it took. I think the opening scenes betray it as it makes It feels like it's nothing particularly original.

484. Gold (2014) – marketed as a comedy/drama and it's only ever occasionally funny. This Irish production opens with literally the double of sheamus being asked by Maisie Williams (who's performance is really good but she's no good at the Irish accent) for steroids (insert wrestling joke here). The film as it's charming moments but I don't think it quite gets out of the starting block (this is where I should explain it's about competitive racing, so that was a witty comment ). 485. He's Just Not Into You (2009) – I can't help but say I was not into it. Despite an all star cast (some people I'm big fans of), I just didn't really like it very much. One of the reasons it's possibly because I've never been like any of the male characters and the behaviour of them is like the crux of the movie. The all film as a six degrees of separation and makes me assume Baltimore (where the film is set) is very small because of these connections. Give it a miss.

J.J. Abrams came in and helped save this franchise. This was a big turning point thanks to a chilling performance by Hoffman, fun side characters, great action, and some really interesting plot twists. [****]

Movie #89289628902809 Spider Baby-Spoopy Movie Time airing Amazon Prime Found another modern horror host show on Amazon Prime. This time the hosts are CGI created people. And they do talk over the movie a bit. I love Spider Baby. Kinda neat that is it one of the last films for both Lon Chaney JR and Mantan Moreland and also one of the first roles for Sid Haig. Plus you got the legendary Jack Hill as the director. Best known for Switchblade Sisters and 2 great Pam Grier flicks,Coffy and Foxy Brown. TOo bad the print Spoopy Movie Time uses is a muddled blurry mess. And yes they spell Spooky Spoopy. I've come to hate this forced funny term.

247. When A Stranger Calls (1979) *bluray* I’ve wanted to see this one for a while, ever since Mortician sampled it on their 1995 debut album ‘Hacked Up for Barbeque’. The first act was terrifying. Too much for me, since I’m not big on suspense horror. It was pretty funny how dumb the police were in that sequence. The rest of the movie tones down the terror and goes into a more grittier piece, very reminiscent of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Then in the last act it gets back to the suspense thrill ride and everyone gets dumb again. I really enjoyed it though. The three leads (the private investigator, the older lady and the killer) were all really good and the music was really well done. Part of me wishes it was a little gorier but another part of me is glad that it wasn’t, since the only people that die are two small children and I don’t like that stuff. A winner on atmosphere.

486. Inbred (2011) – firstly, should I be offended since it's set in my part of the world? (though this is a village and I live in a city) It starts off being a run of the mill outsiders run afoul of the locals, but becomes even more entertaining in it's insanity and some of the deaths are quite ingenious and I didn't expect to see blackface pop up (which works in the context of this movie). Ended up liking this way more then I expected.
487. Jetsons The Movie (1990) – it's not a patch on the original series but it's watchable. The film as a clear eco message but given the Jetsons world reliance on things like technology that message gets muddled. The songs (by the Judy Jetson replacement Tiffany) are not bad but feel out of place. I wonder if the Thanks George at the ending which in universe is aimed at Jetson was added for his voice artist George O'Hanlon who had a stroke in the recording studio making this movie and later died in hospital (bummer note to end on I know).

Movie #9809589885hh3883
Manos Returns
Amazon Prime Video
Feels like for the past 20 years I have been hearing that a sequel to the cult classic Manos Hand of Fate was being made. Heard that Gene Snitsky and Maria,Mike Bennet's wife, were in it. Was looking for something to watch/listen to while I cleaned the house. Saw Manos Returns and had to see it.
What a pile of steaming donkey shit. This is barely over an hour. The budget was maybe in the low four figures. The acting ,besides the guy playing Torgo,is horrible. And really there isn't much to the film. A car with 4 people end up stuck at the house from the original Manos film. Torgo is still there. Stuff happens and right about the time you are about to plunge some forks into your eyes and ears,so you dont have to see or hear this turd of a film, the movie ends.
Seems there is a prequel to Manos that is on Amazon Prime Video. Might give that a shot tomorrow.

This is not an enjoyable film. It's very good but it's not one you want to watch more than once. It's uncomfortable and feels claustrophobic. You're on this unsettling journey with the protagonist and you feel as helpless as she does. This movie works well because of Julia Garner's performance. [***]

248. Happy Birthday to Me *bluray* A good early 1980’s slasher that I unfortunately blew the twist of when I was reading the production notes of it. Too bad but I don’t know how you wouldn’t be able to see it coming. But I say that knowing what was coming. .., OR DID I!!! ?? ... Anyway, I really liked this one. It did a good job of building the characters up as more than cannon fodder, much like the first Friday the 13th did. The music was very similar too. Some parts were a little “what they f***?” until you realize that it was just the one characters hallucinations. The only problem really was the was that the volume mixing on the bluray I have was all over the place, with the quiets being way too quiet and the louds being way too loud. And it was a little too long. 1 hour 50 minutes is a long time for a horror movie. ...and my mother-in-laws name is Virginia/“Ginny” and it’s always weird for me to hear it in a movie.

488. Knives Out (2019) – I heard good stuff about this movie (including on here) and I wasn't disappointed, a whodunnit that becomes more of a why and howdunnit, with a terrific cast including a great performance by Daniel Craig, but the rest of the cast impress including Ana de Armas, who I had heard of but never seen her in anything. Recommended, and heard there is going to be a sequel focusing on Craig's character, so that is good.
489. London To Brighton (2006) – sometimes I don't always give British gangster movies a chance, often because they star actors who don't appeal to me (such as Danny Dyer) but thought I'd give this a chance, and this wasn't like I expected (in a good way), much darker then I thought it would be with the two female leads being terrific. So overall a pleasant surprise.
