So I have noticed in recent memory when watching a movie on TV, as well as movie trailers and noticed that the word "shit" has become more appropriate to use (I noticed it in the Birds of Prey trailer). It didn't help that "dick" has become more appropriate to say in a green-band trailer. I don't mean to sound like a prude here, but I remembered how even in the past 20 years, "ass" and "bitch" became more appropriate to use. "Ass" isn't all that bad of a word, so I can understand. Although it's funny to have heard that even in some TV edits of movies, especially those released in the 2000s, to still hear "ass" being censored. I remember when All About the Benjamins aired on Fuse and the censors for that movie were too distracting.
I am certain that when I watched The Sandlot last night, during the pool scene, the line "Oh man, he's in deep shit" was left intact. I didn't get to see it when Benny let out the big "oh shit" which culminated in that chase sequence, but I swear that when I watched it sometime last summer or before that, that the big "oh shit" was still censored.
So I was wondering. When did this all start? I'm not complaining here. I'm just a little surprised that this word, which was once considered the second or third (It seems that the C-word has superiority over the F-word) worst word to use in stuff. Even though it's often used in PG-13 films and T-rated games, which is the PG-13 of the ESRB.

Well... South Park blew the door off it with their infamous episode where they said shit 216 times. They got the idea for that episode when there were a couple new stories about NYPD Blue saying it.

FX and FXX has allowed it for years, but this season's It's Always Sunny had at least one f-word uncensored almost every episode. Wasn't expecting that.

Started watched Mayans on Hulu, and was surprised at how many f***s are said in situations where it would be really difficult for an editor to hide it.
Is that a thing you can say on basic cable now?

After George Carlin died. Before his death the FCC insisted on enforcing the ban on vulgar language on television simply so Carlin could keep on doing his "seven dirty words" routine. After he passed the head of the FCC said "finally, I can stop saying the word 'poopies'".

Shit being one of the few swear words that doesn't have any connotations around race, gender, sexuality, etc. makes it a really useful one to use, so I think it may just be that.

On the very rare occasion I watched Friends I recall an episode where Rachel and Ross were arguing and she said shit. And then they made up.

As the resident Friends-loser, this made me do a double take cause I recall no instance of it happening. So I looked it up, and yup, never happened. Closest example would be Joey making a “does a bear shit in the woods?” Joke that apparently was only included in the DVD. The usage of curse words really blows my mind. I’m only 31, so maybe it’s the raised-catholic in me, but I always upturn an eyebrow hearing certain curse words on certain channels or shit (ha) that’s allowed on the radio now simply compared to 10-20 years ago. Just this last Monday watching RAW, the tv remained on whatever new crap show USA was showing about cheerleaders or something and I hear a big ol “..f***ing..” and I’m like “what?!?? My virgin ears!” |

I want to say it started with South Park's episode where they said it over 200 times in a single episode, but it took a few years after that for it to start gaining traction. I think it's because "shit" has become a less severe word in general in the US over the years, so more people are desensitized to it.

I remember when it was a big deal that they allowed Hawkeye Pierce to call someone a “son of a bitch” on M*A*S*H
The first time I recall “shit” being used on a regular, non-cable channel was when Mark Green was dying of brain cancer on ER. He was getting out of bed and collapsed on the floor and just screamed it out in frustration.

I noticed a year or two back that all of a sudden every original show on TBS started using “shit” pretty liberally. Like all the shows were 7 years old and they had just heard one of their parents say it.
Particularly on Conan and American Dad.
