Not a lot of dream matches they can do but there are some.
Toru Yano versus Orange Cassidy.
Show me somebody who says they dont want to see that, and I'll show you a liar.

Really in the short term I'm not seeing what the benefit is for AEW. Longterm it could help with growing an international presence I'll grant, but for now I really can't see NJPW doing a whole lot to bring in ratings or anything and while it might bolster some ticket sales in the short term, at the moment it's not like AEW is struggling with those anyway.

At the very least, they should be able to pop some ratings in the short term. It's hard to say exactly what kind of impact a star like Tanahashi, Ibushi, Naito, or Okada would bump, but I would be willing to bet AEW wins pretty decisively if they give at least a week's build to the first appearance of top New Japan talent. The Wednesday audience of both shows is mostly the audience that would know who these people are and understand the ramifications of such a partnership.

I agree with the long-term benefit, however, for a company a little over a year old and 4 months into having a television deal in the states, international exposure is something for the back burner. I think they need to focus heavily in their own market, and not make similar mistakes that other US companies (TNA and ROH) have made in the past; ie sacrificing home-grown talent to another company to name one example.

{Spoiler}Even more clear if Jericho loses to Tanahashi, allowing Hiroshi to challenge for the AEW Title.

Language warning.
Beginning about 4:20 in, but especially 5:15 onward.
Jericho gets into his wants, as for any kind of connection, that he won, but that the forbidden door need not remain shut. That he isn't in a position to make the decision himself, that there is money to be made together, and that he does not discuss contracts, but that there are more NJPW match ups he wants for himself, specifically Minoru Suzuki, Will Ospreay, and Kota ibushi in particular. Credits Tanahashi for making the first step in bridging this gap.
That all in consideration, I really don't know. Maybe this is all one big cocktease, but NJPW tends to be pretty conservative about other companies they aren't formally partners with. Allowing Jericho to wear his title belt out, having it in the press conference, and doing this interview like this, as well as their own allowing mentions of Tanahashi's bet on their twitter, if I recall, it is all the sort of thing they do not normally do. This really feels more like a taste test to see if fans are hungry for it, and I can't speak for anyone else, but I know I am.

Perhaps New Japan could use AEW as a partner for their US events, maybe even having special Dynamites with NJPW stars.

I've thought of that for a while. AEW has a lot of young guys that could use seasoning and maybe working once a week in AEW isn't a good way to gain experience. Being on the NJPW USA cards though could help AEW talent, and also help NJPW fill out cards. A win-win. Better yet, how about sending some guys like Darby Allin or Jungle Boy to compete in BOTSJ? Or guys like Private Party going to World Tag League to gain some experience? Excursions can work both ways.
If I'm AEW I'd target someone like Suzuki, who is a freelancer. He doesn't need NJPW's permission to face Jericho on an AEW show, but it looks like a big NJPW star is showing up.

I dont think people realize how troublesome would be to get a Freelancer to work in the US.It would be easier to get a visa and manage schedule if it is someone under NIPW
And it was hard enough for the girls to handle it all and they had contracts

Against NXT it would because most of the fans of NXT likely are familiar with NJPW based of the kind of fans that more watch NXT over the other brands. I look at it is, to avoid all these ex WWE to gain more store power. Having NJPW talent would be the better way. A lot of outside looking in fans look at AEW saying they need more star power but in the same time joke anytime a rumor ex WWE jumping when there no compete is over. The only local answer from that would be this. The benefit is it can help increase more buyrates to a PPV if they do a special. It would help NJPW in the North American Markets that they been wanting to do and without the TV deal anymore. They need some kind of way to regain that. TNT is a much larger stage than AXIS TV. Both would benefit from a partnership. It favors NJPW more than it does AEW.

This opens up AEW wrestlers working for a place they had a lot of success in, it opens up matches fans want to see, and it gives them a chance to have a full time partner in Japan. Like WHO CARE WHATS NXT fans think about it? Like who cares if 100k fans watch one way or the other. Okada, Naito, Suzuki, Ibishi wrestling matches for AEW is far more exciting for wrestling fans then worrying about what 100k-200k overnight tv viewers thought in a particular week.
