Quotes from 411mania's transcription of a recent Michael Cole podcast (link in the link): Yeah, I agree with Vinnie Mac here, it was f***ing atrocious. However, I didn't book the bloody thing. Still, as it's rare for anyone to report McMahon actually admitting "this thing I came up with sucked", worth noting, imo.

Statement kind of loses a little something when you realise he booked the feud to go on another two PPVs after this.

Statement kind of loses a little something when you realise he booked the feud to go on another two PPVs after this. And continuing to have Cole do the heel announcer thing all the way until King’s legit heart attack put a stop to it.

Anyone with eyes and half a brain knew this had zero potential to be good before they stepped foot in the ring. He's been in wrestling longer than most of us have been alive, he knew damn well announcer feuds are always garbage but he did it anyway because he books the company for his enjoyment only.

You can’t have your lead spokesperson on your programming be someone of ill repute. Dude’s already fighting a f***ing uphill battle as it is doing that role as a babyface because of all the phrasing tropes everyone’s picked up on over the years and because the company itself is seen as a monster heel, so let’s actively TRY to make you hate him.

Cole got knocked out and carried on the match.
THIS match. For real.

Who decided it would be a good idea to have Michell Cole wrestle a match?

A reminder that this also happened between the two.

this match should have been 5 minutes of Jerry beating up Cole, the end. that's what the fans wanted. nobody wanted a 40 minute match between a retired Jerry Lawler and a non-wrestler in Michael Cole, much less one that ends with Cole winning in an utterly baffling fashion.

So what was worse, that match or Cena/Cole?

So what was worse, that match or Cena/Cole? One would think that this would end the heel Cole experiment, but nope.

I think that match came before Lawler’s heart attack, which was in fall 2012 and in the midst of CM Punk’s heel run, where he invoked it for heel heat.

So what was worse, that match or Cena/Cole? This was worse because it made Cena look like a gigantic bully picking on a non-wrestler who could not defend himself

The Cena/Cole match was in June 2012, then Lawler's cardiac arrest happened three months later.
