The pop for Austin's run in is insane. Could be in the top five all time.

This is also the decade anniversary of Bret/Shawn hugging it out and the wwe/tna Monday night wars starting. Hogan and Jeff hardy debuted on tna that night I think

I always find it crazy how the ratings are. The first hour of that Nitro did a 5.5 rating. That means matches like Hugh Morrus vs Glacier and Booker T vs Hale got higher ratings than pretty much anything Raw has done the last ten years.

The pop for Austin's run in is insane. Could be in the top five all time. I was at that raw taping up until that Austin pop the biggest reaction was Big Bossman grabbing Debra’s butt which got a shockingly loud pop. Then Austin came out and it was easily the loudest reaction I’ve ever heard at a wrestling show I’ve ever been to.I also remember the fans not wanted to leave they just wanted to keep celebrating with Foley it was such a cool night.

It's *the* super pop, isn't it? Perfect storm. Folk despised Rock for his heel turn, they adored Mick Foley, and Austin had been off tv for a week or two.

The best part of Mankind winning is that Vince is so clearly trying and failing to hide how happy he is for Mick.
That grimace is the best he can do to hide his smile.

If anything shows that not all heat is good heat is the fingerpoke of doom segment It also showed the extent to which the talent and WCW were booking with utter contempt for the fans. Nitro would never win the ratings war with WWE from this night afterwards. They might have, except for Schiavone's announcement that Mick had won the world title with the snarky, "That'll put butts in the seats." A lot of big moments have happened in early January; they set the tone in WWE for Wrestlemania (early on) and the Rumble (when that became established). Even elsewhere, it was a slate-cleaning of sorts or a way to set up new feuds or alliances or angles, or to put twists into the established ones. It was also when some major developments were dialed back - after they were defeated at Survivor Series 2014, the Authority was brought back after Seth Rollins held Edge's neck hostage to force John Cena to consent. I stopped watching for about a year and a half after that.

Everybody remembers Mankind winning the gold... Nobody remembers the cutaways to Dennis Knight locked in a dungeon or Terri Runnels having a miscarriage.

It doesn't really get mentioned much, but after Foley won, thousands of people switched back to Nitro to see the closing angle with Goldberg and the NWO. Nitro actually beat Raw in the overrun that night.

Nitro actually beat Raw in the overrun that night. Foley I think mentioned that on a Legends Roundtable. He said that made it clear that WCW had a show fans wanted to see, but their own arrogance of spoiling the title change basically screwed themselves out of it. He pointed out too that Raw was a taped show from Worcester, Mass while Nitro was live from the Georgia Dome and should have killed Raw in the ratings. What I think really needs to be taken away from the Monday Night War is how much of WCW's death was self inflicted. WWE's turnaround with the rise of Austin and Rock and Mr. McMahon as the evil owner contributed certainly, but WCW's implosion is what needs to be most studied. Edit: Just thinking about this now, but is this the only time that the WWE and WCW world titles changed hands the same show? I know it's not the same night, but I don't recall any other time where both titles changed hands on the same week the shows aired.

And was it already planned for WCW, oe was it a reaction to the TAW taping?
