Didn’t they swap Dicks in Bewitched? Dick York fell ill during the 5th season, to the point to where he not only quit the series but working altogether (except for a few one-off appearances on TV). The rest of his life he worked on getting better and fighting the addiction to painkillers.

Well the thing about Cheers was that during the Diane years, the show was very much a "will they/won't they" show for Sam and Diane. They had basically taken that about as far as it could go when Shelley Long left. With her gone the show became much more of an ensemble cast and really breathed new life into it. I really believe that's why it went eleven seasons instead of only seven or eight. No doubt. When they made the decision after Long left to go to more of an ensemble show, it got better. That allowed a very talented cast to do their thing. Spin City had something of the same. The show at the beginning was mainly about Mike and Ashley's relationship, when they wrote out Carla Gugino, the show got better. It became more of an ensemble show, and about the workings and people of City Hall. Mike was still the main character, but everybody else got more time and the show got better. It may not count, but Legends of Tomorrow got better when Sara took over as the captain. Darvill had a reduced role in season 2, and left at the end of season 3. The show getting better also was helped by the Hawks and Savage story not being around anymore.

Hattie Hayridge was just as good a Holly as Norman Lovett and saw Red Dwarf through many series. Though they later reverted to Lovett's version, hers is by no means a downgrade and indeed has many of the character's most iconic moments and got the characterisation perfect. Also, David Ross originally played Kryten. When they brought the character back the actor changed to Robert Llewellyn.

Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, coming from Edward Norton. I don't think anybody missed Norton after seeing Ruffalo in The Avengers. Or Eric Bana. I didn't hate Hulk. I thought the comic panels were kind of cool, and they had a decent cast with Connelly, Josh Lucas, Sam Elliott, and Nick Nolte. Bana was an unknown in America, but so was another Aussie who got his big break playing a comic book character. I wonder what would have happened if Hulk were bigger, Bana caught fire, and he stayed as Banner/Hulk.

The show getting better also was helped by the Hawks and Savage story not being around anymore. I liked Darvill on Dr. Who, but Rip was a drag in Legends. Sara taking charge as the leader made the show much better. She became a natural leader and it coincided with the zany turn the show took.
I also might have a crush on Caity Lotz that influences things. >_>

Star Trek. Kirk wasn't the first captain.

Neil Morrissey replacing Harry Enfield in Men Behaving Badly. Added with moving to the BBC, it became one of the UKs biggest sitcoms.

Star Trek. Kirk wasn't the first captain. Pike was just in the pilot. ( well originally) Cast changing from pilot to series is pretty common.

Similarly, Don Cheadle filling in for Terrence Howard as Rhodey/War Machine. Still one of my favorite hand waves of all time. "Rhodey?" "Yeah, it's me. I'm here now."

I really believe that's why it went eleven seasons instead of only seven or eight. I don't know if it counts, but I really thought The Daily Show was dead in the water after Craig Kilborn left. I mean, why would anybody watch the show without "Five Questions"? Or "Pudding Time"? Man was I ever wrong about that. One of the earliest major recastings I can think of is Make Room for Daddy/The Danny Thomas Show when Jean Hagen's Margaret, the shows original wife/mother, was replaced after three seasons by Marjorie Lord's Kathy. Show went another eight seasons afterwards and went from a solid time killer to one of the most popular shows on television at the time. Good to know. I decided to watch Cheers but gave up after season 1. I just didn’t care at all about everything involving those two, wanted to see the rest of the cast do things because they were entertaining. Maybe I’ll jump to then.

Rose on Keeping Up Appearances = going from Shirley Stelfox to Mary Millar.
If we count new main characters, well....Cathy Gale being replaced by Emma Peel.

Aunt Viv from Fresh Prince. The original actress' reported attitude/issues aside, I genuinely thought the second actress was more pleasant and fit the direction of the show much better. Now, again issues aside, the first actress fit better for the feel of the first season or so.

MASH did it fantastically with replacing three of it's characters, giving them all different personalities to their predecessors but still managing to give them the same role within the show

Some folks prefer Mike Nelson over original MST3K host Joel Hodgson. Also there was the successful recasting of both Tom Servo and Dr. Forester's sidekick both played by Josh Weinstein in the KTMA season and season 1 on Comedy Central, replaced at the start of season 2 by Kevin Murphy and Frank Coniff respectively. Murphy's Servo voice is the one most fans associate with the character and TV's Frank was pure gold every time he appeared on screen.

On Angel, Wesley taking over for Doyle after Glenn Quinn's departure not only worked well with the dynamic but also allowed the former character one of the most interesting personal arcs seen on TV.
As fun as Steve was on Married With Children, Jefferson D'arcy better fit where the show was as that point and thankfully gave poor Ted McGinley a show that wasn't canceled as soon as he came on.

If you're going to mention UK TV Series The Avengers, while I have never seen any of the first series but wasn't the focus more on a man called David Keel then John Steed? And by season 2 he was replaced by Cathy Gale Talking of UK TV series', Last Of The Summer Wine replaced members of the main trio multiple times throughout it's 31 season run. Going from Compo, Cleggy and Cyril, to Compo, Cleggy and Foggy, to Compo, Cleggy and Utterthwaite, back to Compo, Cleggy and Foggy, to Compo, Cleggy and Truelove, to Cleggy, Truelove and Tom Simmonite, to Cleggy, Truelove and Billy Hardcastle, to Cleggy, Truelove and Alvin Smedley, to being Alvin Smedley, Entwistle and Hobbo in it's last season

Similarly, Don Cheadle filling in for Terrence Howard as Rhodey/War Machine. By the same token. Zachary Levi (who was originally supposed to be Fandral in Thor 1 but couldn't due to conflicts with filming Chuck) played Fandral in Thor 2 and 3 replacing Josh Dallas (who had to leave due to conflicts with filming Once Upon a Time) >_> "Playing Fandral in Thor 3" aka being the sheathe of Hela's dagger and not getting a single speaking line, sure. (Still bitter about how dirty Sif and Warriors Three were treated in the entire franchise out of the first movie)

I rewatched some Ally McBeal in the last year or so, while Gil Bellows Billy is presented as the love of her life from the pilot episode 1, getting Robert Downey Jr when Bellows left is a upgrade, much more chemistry with him and Flockhart, shame Downey Jr was in his trouble phase so was only about for 1 season.
