Martin Clunes and Neil Morresy were in a TV movie called The Venus Hunters about 15 years ago were they were a 80s synch band forced to reform. Never released on DVD but you can find a scratchy copy on YouTube. Think the song was called 'Starburst' which they play at the end on the Jools Holland show.

This probably could have made it to alternative Rock radio in the weird ass mid-90s
I'm mad they never put out a full version, instead just 30 seconds of perfection
The Sifl and Olly show was filled with awesome, short musical interludes like this

Does The Monkees count? Because The Monkees are the greatest.

With Spinal Tap being mentioned, I might as well mention these two.

Does The Monkees count? Because The Monkees are the greatest. I find it funny that a manufactured band designed to sell disposable music created two of the most timeless songs of the 60s (Daydream Believer and I'm a Believer)
Outside of those already mentioned, I'll nominate Stillwater from Almost Famous

Since the OP stated "for a show" but then used a movie band, I went ahead and just changed my post from what I had to this: Sidenote: Clash at Demonhead is more my jam and damned if the version of 'Black Sheep' they perform outdoes the original, Clash is literally just the band 'Metric' with Brie Larson replacing the lead, so I don't think that's entirely fair. A few fun facts: 1) Beck wrote all of the songs for Sex Bob-Omb. I liked him even more when I learned that, which I did not know was possible. 2) The band, excluding Michael Cera, had to go to music camp to learn how to play their instruments. Why didn't Cera have to go? It's because he was already a much better player than his character actually was. According to Edgar Wright, Cera had to dumb down his playing for the role. 3) Alison Pill, who played Kim Pine, apparently was actually such a natural at drums that according to a behind the scenes video she was ready to go just two weeks into camp.

Whatever Angel and Omar's band was in Rock and Rule. Mok Swagger’s theme song is a jam too. Also seconding Dethklok.
