So, for our UK friends...is this really a big deal? I've been under the impression that the Royal Family are just kind of figureheads, and they aren't really a big deal anymore, except when they get married and have babies.
My theory is that Meghan doesn't like all the pressure and restrictions, and she probably wants to act again at some point.

And here I thought some Netflix bigwig had just ordered something to series. I'm thinking "blimey, that's on the pulse"

Meghan was also subjected to a ridiculous amount of racial abuse, and just general tabloid abuse. And Harry has no patience for tabloids due to how his mother was treated, that apparently left a lasting impact on him. Don’t blame them at all for wanting to get out of the spotlight in the UK.

This too. Harry always seemed like the rebellious one too.

I like them both and if they want to step back from their duties then good luck to them. But they then can’t claim any of the benefits that come from it and need to pay for their own stuff and not have taxpayers cough up a couple of million to tart up a house the Queen owns.

No. The Royal Family are figureheads and although technically, the Queen is included in several Political issues, it’s more of a traditional thing.

The royal family pretty much only exists now to promote tourism, be ambassadors to a bunch of stuff, and officially decide on the formation of parliaments, which technically the Queen is actually allowed to not do.

If it was William & Kate, it'd be even worse than all this since the line of succession would be completely in jeopardy (Prince Charles is next in line to succeed the Queen, then William).
Harry & Meghan just make it (even more) fodder for the tabloids and media, since it's technically off to the side drama. Like the Princess Di and Sarah/"Fergie" Duchess of York stuff of the '90s. The title being stripped of them (possibly) sorta makes it a bigger deal, but mainly in that realm of British royals fanaticism.
If you watch Netflix's The Crown, you see this stuff happen commonly so it's been happening for decades to that family now. Seeing new versions of it happen in the current days almost seems..........lessened?
This isn't really Edward VIII level stuff, just something that fits right in with all that other family drama. It is slightly interesting to hear of various American interference though, lol. 'Murica strikes back!

There has been an orchestrated campaign of hate against Meghan by the right wing press here in the UK since the wedding. It's mainly coming from Piers Morgan, who everyone knows is a sack of shit, and Sarah Vine, the wife of British Tory politician Michael Gove, both of whom work for the Daily Mail, a notoriously scummy newspaper. ITV are also part of it, since they have constantly platformed Meghan's useless f***ing father and stepsister, the latter of which is constantly attacking Meghan. Harry has seen what the press did to his mother, and naturally wants to protect his wife and son.

There was s tweet going round the other day (although as I flat out refuse to go to the Daily Mail website I don’t know if it’s 100% true but it wouldn’t surprise me) that showed pictures of Kate pregnant with her hand on her bump and the headline was something like “Kate lovingly cradles her unborn child”. Next to it was similar pictures of a pregnant Meghan with her hand on her bump and the headline was along the lines of “why can’t Meghan stop touching her bump”.

Similar to after Katrina, one paper describes white people taking food from a supermarket as "courageously trying to survive." While a picture of black people doing the same were "looters who have no regard for law enforcement." Disgusting.

I’ll interject as a Canadian. Harry was stationed here with his time in the service. Never ran into him but you’d hear things since he’s a prince in my shitty city.
They can do as they wish.

I believe she went to him and demanded a divorce, Hollywood style.
He responded by saying his Grandmother would lock her in a tower, Royal Family style.

It's a big deal to Royalists and readers of the right-wing press, who are all up in arms about Harry's disrespect of his family and peddling conspiracy theories about Meghan being wanting to break up the family.
The rest of us have adopted a "Good for them" opinion.
