This is, obviously, personal preference, but my two favourite ever Disney films are Lady and The Tramp, because my granddad had an old VHS tape of it and I would watch it all the time, so it's got that nostalgic base to it for why I like it so much. But, over Christmas, BBC 1 were showing movies, as they often do on Christmas Day and, having heard how good Moana is, I decided to check it out.
To say that it exceeded the hype is an understatement, Moana is a better character than a lot of the old school Disney Princesses because she's actually proactive and takes action instead of needing to be rescued; but, even if you're not a fan of the whole 'Yeah, girl power!' thing, Moana is just a really well done character. She's flawed and, basically, is this kid who's in way over her head, even with the help of the ocean and a Demi-God with a magical hook, but she not only survives it, but she improves as a character from when she started.
Like, I don't know if the person who voiced Moana has done anything else, but she did a really good job with both the comical scenes, like mocking Maui's 'Your Welcome' to the pure desperation as she tearfully begs Maui not to leave after he gets his fish hook cracked. Also, you have to give Dwayne credit for his portrayal as Maui, like, he was very 'Rock' like with his bragging and boasting, but never went into the realm of being unlikeable.
Honestly, I just like the blend of humour and the stakes being so high of Moana trying to restore the heart and help her island home; but the one scene that, for some reason, always makes me laugh till my stomach hurts is when Moana escapes from the island and sees Maui escaping on her raft, she sprints to the ledge, does a full on war-cry and dives off, you think she's going to tackle Maui but you just see her hit the ground like a rock a few feet from the boat.
My only real 'complaint' about it would be the lack of focus on villainous groups, are The Kakamora the only group of bandits that want the Heart of Tifiti? Also, ideally, there would've been more scenes with Tamatoa in it, that crab was in exactly one scene and he's one of the most talked about things in the movie.
I know this seems like me marking out, but I just wanted to show some praise to one of the best Disney movies that has come out in quite a while.

My favorite is Lady and The Tramp as well. It's mainly because of my log of dogs, but I've always felt it is a well told story. I haven't met many people that Lady and The Tramp is also there favorite! Kudos! I thought Moana was fantastic as well.

I never could get into this. It's supposed to be great, but I've tried to watch a few times and can't make it past the first 15 minutes or so. I'm not a big animation connisure (sp?) though. Once in awhile something comes out I like as far as kids movies, but mostly I like "adult" animation like Rick and Morty, Big Mouth, Bojack Horseman, etc.

Moana came out during a really stacked year for Disney overall, but it was easily one of the highlights. Their heroines have been gradually becoming more proactive at least since Ariel so that aspect didn’t shock me. What works about it is how the flow of the story resembles a legend being told, with some slight contemporary tones to the humor without being too anachronistic.
Tamatoa isn’t the main villain, but he has an amazing villain song.

It ranks VERY high in my favorites, and I love Disney so it's a big list.
I particularly love the way the final battle shakes out. What a great movie. it's absolutely beautiful.

I like Lindsey Ellis' point that it basically does some of Pocahontas' plot beats, but takes out everything that didn't work and gives the character a lot more agency. That combined with listening to more authentic voices from the culture they were trying to represent led to a pretty good product. Lin Manuel Miranda's music was also a great touch hitting quite a few styles along the way.

Hate to break it to you, but "Lady and the Tramp" is one movie, not two. ...well, unless you're counting that sequel they released.

Also, OP, did you see the live action Lady and The Tramp on Disney Plus? I thought it was ok, but they made same slight changes that I wasn't a fan of (Jock is a female.... just couldn't get over that).

Definitely give it a look... as a fan of the animated movies, it's worth it. I like the animated one better, but I thought the live action movie was good enough, even with the slight differences.

Back in 2016 I worked at place that employed a lot of islanders (Samoans, French Polynesians, New Zealand Maoris) and after the Christmas break the islander parents were asking each other how many times they took their kids to see Moana.
I think one father took his daughters to see it 5 times in the three week break.

Moana was a total surprise for me.
I was in Folsom for 6 weeks for work and the shift I was on ended at 10pm. After work I decided to go to the cinema cos I wanted to see Arrival. Bought my ticket, it was like me and 10 other people, trailers come on but there's only sound, screens not working. This goes on for 10 minutes and someone comes in, says the screens bust so we can either get a refund or go see something else starting then. Literally the only other thing showing at the time was Moana, I knew nothing about it except it was a Disney movie. Went in, me and one other person in the whole screen and absolutely loved it! Was really impressed with the songs, the character and environment design, the VA's, it was just really really good. I decided to watch it on Christmas on BBC to see if it held up and I was very glad to see it did!
